Five Green and Speckled Frogs Printable
You’ve likely seen different versions of the Five Green and Speckled Frogs rhyme, but it tends to stay relatively the same. The gist of it is 5 frogs jump from a log into the water, one by one, giving your kids a taste of counting backward from 5 to 1.
Whether you read them the rhyme in poem form or as a musical singalong, preschoolers tend to love this rhyme, making it a great way to practice subtraction.
It’s so popular, in fact, that there are several books and videos to choose from, a few of which you can find below for reference.

Prepping the Five Green Speckled Frogs Printable
Prepping the speckled frogs printable is super duper easy! All you need to do is print out as many copies as you want to use, keeping in mind how you will be using them.
You can print 4 copies of the poem with blank lines, or just one, depending on if you’re laminating or not (see below). And then print out the sequencing cards.
Next, grab your laminator and get ready to go. If you want to use a dry erase pocket with the poem sheet, you can do that instead. When I know I’ll be using an item over and over through the years, I definitely fall back on laminating. That way there’s no fussing around with crumpled, unlaminated printables.
After that, cut the sequencing cards apart and laminate them.

Using the Poem and Sequencing Cards
Ready to use your Five Green and Speckled frogs printable? There are several ways to go here. If you printed one copy of the poem, you will want to laminate it or use it with a dry erase sleeve so you can change the numbers out for each verse.
If you printed four copies out, you can write the numbers in before you laminate. This way, you have permanent copies for each verse.
As you say/sing each verse, show the page that corresponds to the appropriate number. If laminated, you can erase and write in the numbers as you go.

As far as the sequencing cards go, there a few ways you can use these, too! Once you’ve gone through the poem/song enough times, your students can help put the cards in sequential order.
For each log card, the kids can draw the corresponding number of frogs on the logs to go along with the number. Alternatively, they can practice writing the number words above the log, or even use little frog toys.
Five Green and Speckled Frogs Extension Activities
You have additional options beyond using the Five Green and Speckled Frogs printable for math activities! Here are some more ideas to put these printables to work for you.
You can use the frog sequencing cards as a team-building exercise for the kids. They can work together in small groups to put the cards in order, which is a great way to promote peer interaction and language skills.
Why not use the printables in a more dynamic way, and turn it into a dramatic play experience? The kids will have a blast acting out the frogs sitting on the log, chomping on bugs, and disappearing into the water!
These frog cards are a great jumping off point for teaching about the life cycle of frogs, including their watery habitat and which bugs they prefer to eat.
I couldn’t resist mentioning this adorable Five Speckled Frogs craft from our friends at A Little Pinch of Perfect. What a fun addition to our printables!

Hand Motion Ideas
I know I love to use hand and/or body movements with rhymes, what about you? The kids tend to love it, too! Here are some ideas to try, but you can definitely make up your own. Or ask the kids to help come up with new hand motions!
Start off using your arm as the log, with the fingers of your opposite hand as the number of frogs.
- Hold up 5 fingers “sitting” on top of your arm as you sing the first line.
- Pretend to be eating as you sing the next line. Rub your belly when you get to, “Yum! Yum!”
- Hold up 1 finger to indicate the one frog who jumps in.
- Place your hands together, palms touching, and pretend to dive into the water. Mimic swimming motions.
- Hold up 4 fingers when singing, “Now there are 4 green speckled frogs. Glub, glub!”
- Repeat until your down to no frogs!
Five Green Frogs Books and Videos
There are several books and videos about those little frogs on a log. They’re great to use in addition to the Five Green and Speckled Frogs printable. Just be warned that once you watch a video of it, the song WILL be stuck in your head all day. And the kids will probably sing it for days! I guess that’s the power of learning through music.
This first video is so cute and colorful, and your kids will be sure to love it. It’s all animated with very lively frogs, with a few surprise animal friends:
This next Five Speckled Frogs video from Bounce Patrol is all kinds of silly, and will probably get a bunch of giggles from your students!
This third video, from Mother Goose Club Playhouse, is a slightly slower version of Five Green and Speckled Frogs, and your preschoolers can follow along with the hand movements as the song is sung.
You may already have a copy of the Five Green and Speckled Frogs book in your library, but here are a couple, plus some more ideas for what you can use during your speckled frog fun.
