Supplies for the DIY cement heart curtain weights
Below you’ll find a list of all the materials that you’ll need to complete this project. More so, we’ll provide some explanations as to how you’ll use every one of them:
- Heart-shaped mold: You can use any type of heart-shaped mold for this project. There are many different types, sizes, and styles, so feel free to choose one that speaks to you.
- DIY fine particle cement: We recommend using the finest particle cement you can find because it will make the surface of your finished weights much smoother. Besides, fine particle cement is better than concrete. This is because it can fill up all the nooks and crannies in the mold much better.
- Water: Use whatever type of water you have on hand. You’ll need it to make the cement mix, so it doesn’t need to be distilled.
- Oil: This will prevent the cement heart from sticking to the mold, thus making it easier to remove later when it dries up. Any type of oil will do, even cooking oil.
- A spoon: Once you pour the cement, you’ll need something to even out the surface of the mold. You can use any type of spoon for this, even a regular kitchen spoon.
- A plastic straw: You’ll need the straw to make the hole inside the cement heart through which you’ll run the jewelry wire.
- Scissors: You’ll need these to cut the plastic straw once the cement heart has dried up. Any cutting tool will do as long as it’s sharp enough.
- A paintbrush: Any paintbrush will do for this project, even a cheap one. You’ll need it to apply oil to the inside of the mold, and to paint the cement heart later on.
- Red acrylic paint: We painted our cement heart red because it’s a classic color that fits the project’s theme very well.
- Curtain clips: We used curtain clips to attach the cement hearts to our draperies. Depending on the design of your draperies, you may also use curtain clips with rings attached to them.
- Crafting or jewelry wire: These will come in handy when you tie the cement heart to the curtain clips mentioned earlier.
How do I make a simple DIY cement heart curtain weight?
Check out these step-by-step instructions, complete with photos!
- Prepare the cement mix: Mix water and fine particle cement in a large bowl, stirring consistently to remove any clumps.
- Prepare the mold: Use your paintbrush to coat the inside of your mold’s shape with oil, making sure you cover it across the bottom and all up the sides. Place your straw within the mold, using your hand to keep it upright. Make sure to position it between the middle and the top part of the cement heart.
- Pour the cement: Use your other hand to spoon your wet cement mix into the mold. Use the back of your spoon to smooth the surface of the mix in your mold. Set the mold aside to dry all the way through.
- Remove the heart from the mold: Pop the shape out of your silicone mold. Use your fingers (and scissors, if necessary) to remove the straw you inserted into the cement mix earlier. Remove as much straw as possible from the inside of the hole.
- Tie the curtain clip: Cut a piece of crafting or jewelry wire about six inches long and fold it in half. Place the ends of the wire through the center space in your little metal clamp and pull the piece of wire through until the clip sits about halfway down its length. Bring the loose wire ends together through the loop and tighten the loop down against the clamp like a slip knot.
- Tie the cement heart: Part your wire ends and string one of them through the hole in the top of your cement shape. Bring the other wire end to meet this one and double-knot the two together. Use your scissors to trim the tips if necessary. Slide the wire back through the heart, so the knot hides discreetly in the hole in the cement.
- Paint the heart: Use your paintbrush to paint the surface of your cement heart, and set the whole project aside to dry once more. You can even hang it while it dries so it wouldn’t have marks on one side from laying it flat on a surface to dry.
How can I make my curtain weights more attractive?
There are a few ways that you can make your curtain weights more attractive:
- Change mold: If you find a heart too much of a cliche, you can try using other molds, such as a star or a flower. Make sure that the mold you choose is silicone so the cement will come out easily.
- Change color: If you plan on changing the shape of your cement curtain weights, you might also change the colors. You can change the color depending on what mold you’re using, or you can use a color that matches that of your curtains.
- Add things to the cement mix: There are plenty of things that you can add to the cement mix to make it more interesting, such as glitter. This will give your curtain weights a little sparkle that will add to the aesthetics of your home. Besides, you won’t have to paint them anymore.
