Kid Craft: Fall Leaf Suncatchers

Marked the arrival of Autumn with this fun and easy fall kid craft.

We just celebrated the first official day of autumn, and the kids and I marked the occasion with this fun and easy fall kid craft. We made fall leaf sun-catchers for our sliding glass door. Since we live in Arizona, we don't really have leaves that turn pretty fall colors. Cactus, oh we have plenty of those, but we have to make our own fall leaves.

Fall Kid Craft: Leaf Suncatcher Supplies

  • Paper plates
  • coffee filters

Fall Kid Craft: Leaf Suncatcher Directions

Step 1: First, to make the coffee filters lay flat, I wet them and squeezed out any excess water. I spread out one damp coffee filter per paper plate. Crafty tip: An empty egg carton makes a good paint palette for kids. Using fall colors (red, orange, yellow, and green) mix food coloring and water until you get the colors you like.

Step 2: The kids used medicine droppers to create colorful patterns. They sucked up each color and made pretty fall color designs on their coffee filters. We talked about the autumn colors--that red and yellow made orange, and the kids loved watching the colors bleed together on the coffee filters.

I had to pay a little more attention to my 3 year old to make sure he didn't squeeze the entire dropper of color on his coffee filter, but he did pretty good!

Our cats were naturally curious! Originally I gave the kids 4 "leaves" to create, but we ended up creating over a dozen of these coffee filter leaves for our back door.

I like that this one sort of looked like a tree while it was drying. Once we had the fall colors like we wanted them we left our coffee filters to dry for a few hours.

Step 3: Next, I found an oak leaf outline on Google, printed and cut it out. I traced the leaf shape on the coffee filters and cut them out. It was hard to decide which areas of the coffee filter to make the leaf shape out of, they were all so pretty!

Step 4: Once all the leaves were cut out the kids had a great time decorating our glass door for fall. Now, they both want fall leaves on the windows in their rooms. I think we'll be making a lot more of these in the next few days!

I love that this fall kid craft can stay up for the next few months.
