Batman: Escape From Arkham Asylum
Batman: Escape from Arkham Asylum is a semi-cooperative game where players take on the roles of the villains trying to break out of Arkham Asylum. In the game you will have hidden objectives that will encourage you to cause chaos, but if you act up too much Batman will be summoned to deal with you. On each turn you can take different actions such as move, attack, search for resources, or craft tools. As you move around the board, tiles will be revealed and adversaries will appear to challenge you. Once the players escape or are all defeated, the game ends.
I kinda love the chaotic energy of this game. It makes sense that the villains would want to work together to escape, but would be an awful pain to organize as each one has different ideas on how to get it done. Hero Realms Dungeons
Hero Realms is a fantastic fantasy deckbuilding game that can be played in a variety of formats. Hero Realms Dungeons comes with 4 starter decks, a new 80 card market deck, 2 new characters (barbarian and alchemist), and the all new dungeons. The dungeons are for solo or cooperative play and give players the chance to explore a 12 encounter dungeon campaign that will have you facing off against fearsome monsters and looting fabulous treasures. Dungeons also gives you legacy style gameplay where your characters can level up after each game all the wat up through 24 levels. The campaign is also offering 3 add on characters (Bard, Druid, and Monk) if you want to add more to your roster.
We really love Hero Realms and considering this campaign includes everything you need to begin, this version of the game is a great way to start. You can delve deeper into Hero Realms Dungeons on Kickstarter here.
Arborea
Arborea is a worker placement game where you, as a guiding spirit, must help grow the realm. The game uses an interesting mechanic where once you place a worker on a track, you can leave them to gather for as long as you like. You’ll gain more rewards the longer they stay on the track, but you need to time when you pull them back to make sure you can gain advantages before the seasons change. Resources gathered can be added to the shared resource pool for all players to use, made into offerings to the Sages to gain gifts, or used to attract animals to your land. You can use the shared resources to build habitats in your ecosystem that the animals will inhabit to gain victory points.
Arborea is visually stunning and the resource track system seems really interesting. If you like puzzley Euro-style games, then make sure to check out Arborea on Kickstarter here.
Luxury Island
Luxury Island is a 2-4 player roll and write (R&W) game where players are vying to see who can be the first to attract 8 tourists to their island. Each turn you will roll the dice and then decide which action space to assign them to. The actions include gaining gold, produce resources, or expand/construct. When you choose to expand you can use your gold to buy a new territory and gain some resources from it. The borders around a territory tell you what kind of resources that spot will generate. Resources can be used to construct a building. These buildings gain you bonuses and tourists. Whoever manages to get 8 tourists first, wins!
I really enjoy roll and writes and its interesting that players can get in the way of other players making the game a little more PVP than most R&Ws I’ve seen. If Luxury Island sounds intruiging, you can learn more on Gamefound here!
Hoki: Fortune Telling Legacy Solitaire
Hoki is a solo card game where you are trying to complete a story and become a Seer. To do so, you must clear 3 piles of cards by discarding them according to the rules. If the top 2 cards of any pile match colors you can discard 1 of them. If two card’s symbols match, you can discard both. If more than 2 cards show a match, you can decide which to discard. If no cards are showing a match, you can move 1 card to a new pile. Once all cards in the piles have been revealed, you will add 1 card to each pile from the reserve and try to finish discarding all cards. If you manage to do it you win!
Hoki is interesting as it has a little campaign in it where you will play three different versions of the game to complete the story. The first game is a tutorial which used the basic rules. The second two games add challenges, adding more difficulty as you go with a legacy system that changes your deck. If you manage to complete all three games you can discover your fortune via the accompanying Book of Sight. Beautiful and mysterious, Hoki looks like the kind of game I’ll want to play over and over again to try to master it. You can discover more about Hoki on Kickstarter here.
