What’s On in Stockholm: August 2020
This summer has probably been a little different than you originally imagined it during those cold, dark months of Swedish winter. However, even COVID-19 has not kept Stockholm from rejoicing in the sunshine, the heat, and fun things to do with friends and family. In the last full month of summer, the city is bursting with activity and life. We have found events for all, whether you seek to venture out in small groups or find virtual adventures from your own home.
Here’s what’s happening in Stockholm this August, including concerts, theatre, art classes, and restaurant pop-ups:
Saturday 1st August
Bergamotte Pop Up Jungle at Tjärhovsgatan 21
A pop up for plant lovers, and who doesn’t love plants! There will be a selection of more than 3,000 plants at this pop-up, including the exotic, the hanging, and the prickly. There will also be plant pots, baskets, and dried flowers available for purchase. Due to COVID-19, Bergamotte has organized a time slot system. Book a time to avoid a wait, or take a chance!
Sunday 2nd and Friday 14th August
Fluid Art with Måla och Skåla
Make your own artwork using the Dutch Pour technique and acrylic paint. All materials are included, as well as a snack. You are welcome to bring your own beverage, and encouraged to bring friends! The class is 825 SEK.
Friday 7th August
Stockholms Bränneri Summer Tour at Rosendals Trädgården
Stockholm Bränneri has distilled a gin inspired by Rosendals garden, made from rhubarb, cherry blossoms, Spanish chervil flower, and lilac. Visit Rosendals Trädgården to taste this gin and try other drinks. Click “attending” on the Facebook event if you plan to go, as they are using the Facebook count to ensure the number of guests is COVID-19 appropriate.
Saturday 8th – Thursday 13th August
Fiction and Reality at Storkyrkobrinken 10
Elin Palmgren will exhibit and sell her graphite and charcoal portraits, both originals and fine art prints. The details in her work are realistic, with surrealist aspects added.
Monday 10th August
Book Signing at Naturkompaniet Kungsgatan 4a
Elle’s new book, Svampbok för Matälskare, or Mushroom Book for Food Lovers, has recently been released. Stop by for a signed copy, then forage for mushrooms to start cooking with.
Wednesday 12th – Sunday 16th August
Stockholm Film Festival Summer Cinema
Due to COVID-19, this summer’s International Film Festival will take on a fun new twist. There will be three different and secret locations for the screenings. The first 50 people to discover one of the locations will be welcomed in. Clues will be provided on social media. We love this scavenger hunt lead-up to the film festival!
Wednesday 12th and Wednesday 26th August
Music in Summer Night at St. Matthew’s Church
Enjoy an evening of music at St. Matthew’s Church this summer. Capacity will be limited to 50 people due to COVID-19. The concerts will also be streamed digitally.
Saturday 15th – Sunday 16th August
Stockholm Photo Marathon 2020
The first time this event occurred was in 1987, when Swedish photographers were to take 24 photos in the same number of hours. Now, you can participate with either 12 photos or 24 photos in as many hours, using set themes. The participation fee is 370 SEK.
Saturday 15th August
The Midnight Run
This annual run is a celebration that typically takes place in Södermalm. However, due to COVID-19, this year’s race will be a virtual one. Choose your own 5 or 10 km run and, with the tracking app, listen to the audio file including a sing-along, countdown, starting shot, and music along the course. The fee for the race is 150 SEK and includes a shirt, a medal, and a digital diploma.
Monday 17th – Sunday 23rd August
Summer Design Week
This week will be filled with design events, cocktail parties, seminars, openings and more. It’s a great opportunity for everyone who loves design to come together, share ideas, and gather inspiration.
Monday 17th – Friday 21st August
Open Ballet Class with Dragos Mihalcea
Dragos Mihalcea, a former Dutch National Ballet principal dancer, will be leading this five-day intensive course, open to dancers with a background in classical ballet. The cost for five-days is 1250 SEK, and 285 SEK for a drop-in class.
Wednesday 19th August
Cherrie at Trädgården
Cherrie is a Somali-Swedish RnB artist who grew up in Rinkeby. Due to COVID-19 and government regulations, this concert date is a tentative one. Entrance to the venue is 100 to 170 SEK, depending on the time you arrive.
Thursday 20th – Friday 21st August
Nowhere Restaurant
Going nowhere has never been more exciting! Oddbird will open a pop-up restaurant in collaboration with chefs from Garba and design-duo-turned-B&B-owners The Norrmans. Small tables will be set up in the Häringe-Hammersta nature reserve. Head to the Oddbird website to make reservations.
Thursday 20th August
The Grand Budapest Hotel at Bio & Bistro Capitol Stockholm
Wes Anderson’s 2014 film takes place in the 1930s at the Grand Budapest Hotel, a popular European ski resort. The concierge, Gustave H., finds himself a chief suspect in a guest’s murder. The film is in English and will not have subtitles. Tickets range from 160 to 240 SEK.
Tuesday 25th August
RuPaul’s Drag Race Werq the World Tour at Cirkus
In this show, Kameron Michaels, Plastique Tiara, Yvie Oddly and others travel through iconic periods of history to find their sister Asia O’Hara and bring her home. Tickets start at 540 SEK. There is also a private meet and greet with the queens before the show.
Sunday 30th August – Tuesday 1st September
Swan Lake at Cirkus
The renowned ballerina Irina Kolesnikova returns to Cirkus to perform Swan Lake with dancers from the St. Petersburg Ballet Theater. Tickets start at 480 SEK.
Ongoing in August
Outdoor Kizomba Bachata Salsa at Rålambshovsparken
Every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, you have the chance to dance outside with Dance Fusion Unity. The location will typically be Rålambshovsparken, though some days the event will be at Tantilunden and Hornsbergs Strand. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, only 44 people will be permitted at a time. If you swish ahead, you can reserve your spot! A lesson costs 100 SEK.
Cider at Spirit Museum
Craft cider’s popularity has been on the rise; the Spirit Museum gives us a look into the history of cider and the process of making your own cider in this exhibit. After viewing the exhibit, head over to the bar for a tasting of four ciders. Entrance to the museum is 120 SEK. If you wish to do a tasting as well, the price is 270 SEK, or 160 SEK for only the tasting.
Hubble: a Journey through Time and Space at Fotografiska
Fotografiska has collaborated with the European Space Agency and the Department of Astronomy at Stockholm University to present photographs taken by the space telescope Hubble. Hubble is celebrating its 30th anniversary and 30 years of educating us about the wonders of space. The exhibit closes on Sunday 30th August. Tickets are 170 SEK. Due to COVID-19, tickets are being sold in 90-minute time slots to limit the number of guests for safety.
Sculpture in Nature at Artipelag
Take an afternoon stroll through forest and meadow, enjoying sculptures from Nordic and international artists set in beautiful scenery. Although this is a permanent exhibit it is constantly evolving, with new additions that are sometimes permanent and at other times borrowed. Entrance to this exhibit is 50 SEK.
The White Bus at Artipelag
While you are visiting Artipelag, visit The White Bus exhibit as well, which displays work from Swedish artist, Jan Håfström. The paintings refer to the efforts to release individuals in concentration camps during World War II. This effort was organized by Swedish diplomat Folke Bernadotte. Entrance to this exhibit is 100 SEK.
Tour of Drottningholm Court Theatre
There is a daily guided-tour in English of this theatre, which dates back to 1766. In the tour, you will learn about the machinery of the theatre, as well as the secrets of theatre life. Tickets are 110 SEK.
Buried at Birka at Birka Vikingastaden
Buried at Birka is a new exhibit that tells the story of four individuals, each of whom was buried at Birka despite many differences. This exhibit will give you insight into the Birka of the Viking time, using reconstruction of grave gifts, analysis of teeth, and more.
Lisa Larson at Gustavsberg Porcelain Museum
Lisa Larson is one of Sweden’s most prominent ceramic artists. This exhibit displays work mostly from her time at Gustavsberg porcelain factory between the years 1954 and 1980. The exhibit has about 200 objects. Admission to the museum is 80 SEK.
Generation Wealth at Fotografiska
Lauren Greenfield’s exhibit, Generation Wealth, documents society’s growing obsession with wealth. Her work explores materialism, celebrity culture and social status. Tickets to the museum are 170 SEK.
Wanja Djanaieff and Her 22 Favourite Colours at Marabouparken Konsthall
In this exhibit, you will view sketches, clothes, and patterns by the influential Swedish textile designer Wanja Djanaieff. Admission to this exhibit is 100 SEK. To ensure everybody’s safety, the number of visitors at a time is currently limited to 15.
100 Point Challenge
Whether you are visiting Stockholm or you live here, there is always more to learn about the city you are in. The 100 Point Challenge is a competitive game designed to get you exploring the city of Stockholm. Choose to do this with a friend, a group, or a company. Prices for the challenge vary based on group size and the particular challenge you choose.
Reinvent Your Old Furniture at Glada Ungmöns Diversehandel
Craft Educator and Art Director Carina Åkerström will teach you how to transform a tired piece of furniture into an upcycled treasure, using various materials, colors, and techniques. The class is 2 hours long and includes access to materials, coffee, and cake. It costs 580 SEK per person.
Stockholm Craft Beer Tour
Travel from one location to the next, sampling craft beers along the way. You will have a guide to tell you the history of Swedish beer. Please note that you must be at least 18 years of age to participate in this tour. The tour is 800 SEK per adult, and includes six 20 cl samples of beer.
