Whether you’re soaring through the skies, cruising on a train, or navigating winding roads, there are a few things that can make a huge difference in your traveling comfort. One trusty travel companion that will keep you cozy and refreshed throughout your expedition is a travel pillow.
These fantastic inventions have transformed the way we rest and relax on the move, ensuring that long flights, bumpy car rides, and sleepless train journeys are a thing of the past. Because we all know that jet lag, cramped seats, and unfamiliar sleeping arrangements can wreak havoc on our bodies and minds.
From classic U-shaped pillows to innovative inflatable designs, we’ll explore how these travel accessories provide unparalleled comfort and support, making your time on the road more comfortable.
We’ll take a look at various features and benefits of different travel pillow styles, helping you find the perfect match for your unique needs.
Travel pillows are specifically created to address the unique challenges of resting and sleeping while on the move, be it on airplanes, trains, buses, or even during road trips.
Unlike regular pillows, travel pillows are compact, lightweight, and often come in portable designs that can be easily carried in luggage or attached to backpacks. They are crafted with travel-friendly materials, such as memory foam, microbeads, or inflatable chambers which offer a balance between comfort and convenience.
Travel pillows come in various shapes and styles to cater to different needs and preferences. The classic U-shaped pillows wrap around the neck, providing support to the head and neck while preventing the head from nodding forward or sideways during sleep. They are particularly popular among air travelers.
In addition to the U-shaped design, there are also J-shaped, C-shaped, and rectangular travel pillows that offer alternative ways to rest and relax while in transit. Some travel pillows are designed to be worn like a scarf, offering neck support from different angles. Others can be transformed into lumbar supports or folded into different configurations to adapt to various seating positions.
The primary purpose of travel pillows is to alleviate discomfort, reduce muscle strain, and promote better sleep during travel. They provide a cushioning effect, helping to maintain proper alignment of the head, neck, and spine, which is crucial for avoiding stiffness and soreness.
When it comes to choosing a travel pillow, it’s essential to consider your personal preferences, travel habits, and specific needs. Here are some key factors to keep in mind when selecting the perfect travel pillow for your journeys.
Explore the different shapes and designs available, such as U-shaped, J-shaped, C-shaped, rectangular, or scarf-like. Consider how you typically rest or sleep during travel and choose a shape that provides the most comfort and support for your neck and head.
Pay attention to the materials used in the pillow’s construction. Memory foam pillows offer excellent contouring and support, while microbead pillows provide a more flexible and moldable feel. Inflatable pillows are lightweight and adjustable, ideal for saving space in your luggage.
Consider the size and portability of the travel pillow. Opt for a compact and lightweight pillow that can easily fit into your carry-on or be attached to your backpack without adding excessive bulk or weight.
Some travel pillows come with adjustable features, allowing you to customize the firmness and fit according to your preferences. These adjustable pillows can be a great option if you desire more control over your comfort level.
Look for a travel pillow that offers adequate support for your neck, head, and spine. It should help maintain proper alignment and reduce strain on your muscles. Consider the level of cushioning and softness provided by the pillow, ensuring a balance between comfort and support.
Check if the travel pillow comes with a removable and washable cover, as it can be convenient for keeping your pillow clean and fresh during your travels.
Before making a purchase, read customer reviews and recommendations to gain insights into the experiences of other travelers. It can help you gauge the quality, durability, and overall satisfaction level of a particular travel pillow.
Using a travel pillow offers numerous benefits and can greatly enhance your travel experience.
Traveling often involves long periods of sitting or reclining in cramped spaces, which can lead to discomfort and difficulty falling asleep. A travel pillow provides crucial support and cushioning for your neck and head, allowing you to find a comfortable position and enjoy better rest and sleep during your journey.
A travel pillow helps maintain proper alignment of your neck, head, and spine, which is essential for reducing strain, muscle tension, and potential pain. By providing adequate support, it minimizes the risk of stiffness and discomfort associated with extended periods of sitting or sleeping in awkward positions.
One of the primary purposes of a travel pillow is to prevent your head from nodding forward or sideways during sleep. This helps avoid the dreaded neck strain and soreness that can result from an unsupported head position, ensuring you wake up feeling refreshed and pain-free.
Jet lag, characterized by fatigue, sleep disturbances, and disorientation, can significantly impact your travel experience. A travel pillow can help you get more restful sleep while flying, minimizing the effects of jet lag and helping you adjust to new time zones more smoothly.
Many travel pillows are versatile and can be used in various settings beyond transportation. They can provide additional support for your back, lumbar region, or even serve as makeshift cushions for other body parts. This versatility makes them useful not only during travel but also in different situations, such as working from home or watching movies in bed.
By investing in a quality travel pillow, you can transform long hours of travel into moments of relaxation, ensuring you arrive at your destination feeling refreshed and ready to embark on new adventures.
Travel pillows are suitable for a wide range of individuals and can benefit various types of travelers.
Whether you frequently embark on long-haul flights or find yourself on shorter domestic trips, travel pillows are excellent companions for air travel. They offer much-needed neck and head support, allowing you to rest and sleep comfortably during the journey, especially during overnight flights.
If you enjoy exploring new destinations by car or bus, a travel pillow can make those hours on the road more comfortable. It provides support and reduces fatigue, allowing you to arrive at your destination feeling less stiff and more energized.
Daily commuters who spend a significant amount of time on trains, buses, or other forms of public transportation can greatly benefit from travel pillows.
Individuals with pre-existing neck or back issues, such as chronic pain or spinal conditions, can find relief and added comfort with travel pillows. The support and cushioning provided by these pillows can help alleviate discomfort and reduce the impact of travel-related strain.

]]>Looking for creative containers for flowers? Here are seven creative ideas to make your flowers look even cuter.
Do you ever sing the wrong words to songs?
You know.
Like if (hypothetically speaking) hear a song over the loudspeakers at the coffee shop and you think the words are all about how “Jeremiah was a bulldog” and you sing about Jeremiah and how he was a good friend of yours (complete with choreography) to all and sundry.
And everyone starts laughing.
Because apparently, Jeremiah was an amphibian.
Sigh.
I may not know about lyrics, but I know ALL ABOUT a flower arrangement.
Especially if it comes in a super cute container.
So today?
Let’s discuss flowers and creative ideas and creative containers and the awkward lyric singers who love them.
I saw this vase several months ago when it was on sale and I fell in love.
I’ve never seen a vase like this before.
I’ve seen glass vases and brass vases and vases on a pedestal and vases that have a stand, but I’ve never seen a completely round vase before that set into a brass stand. It fascinated me, but it was such a splurge for me that I put it in my cart, then took it out, then searched for another vase like it, and even looked up brass stands.
And I couldn’t find anything like it.
So I bought it.
Best. Decision. Ever.
It elevates any kind of flower. The rim is narrow so flowers hang perfectly over the edge. I keep it filled with flowers from the grocery store and flowers like this that I cut from my yard.
In amazing news, I just saw that the vase is on sale for the Fourth of July.
You can see it here.
Never underestimate the power of the lowly mason jar.
When I lived in Kentucky people used them to can things in. They’d can tomatoes and green beans and pickles and jelly.
Me?
I use them to decorate with.
I’ve made an entire mantel with nothing but mason jars and greenery from the yard. The best place to find mason jars like these are yard sales. I’ve found so many vintage mason jars tucked away next to a mattress and a washing machine.
In case you can’t find any blue mason jars at yard sale, I found the prettiest set on Amazon.
Just line them up and fill them with flowers.
Easiest arrangement ever.
Every night when I write a blog post, I make a cup of tea.
Lemon Zinger is my favorite.
A teacup or a coffee cup is such an easy container to add flowers to. Sometimes I use a teacup or coffee cup for a few extra flowers I have left over from an arrangement or flowers that have broken stems. A single large hydrangea also looks perfect in a cup like this.
Of course, I love a cup that’s blue and white, but any color combination works perfectly.
I found a mug that looks like this one here.
I love the idea of flowers in a basket.
There’s just something easy and simple to add a mason jar or small vase to the center of a basket and fancy up a flower arrangement.
But what if you took it to the next level with a little gingham?
You could wrap the basket with blue and white gingham or add a basket liner or even tie a scarf or large ribbon around the center of the basket.
I found a similar blue and white basket here.
When you are shopping for mason jars at the yard sale?
Look for vintage pitchers, too. You can also find pitchers like these at thrift stores.
The narrower top like this pitcher has makes it easier to arrange the flowers. If your pitcher has a wider rim at the top, add a flower frog inside to help stabilize the flowers.
This tool also helps keep all the flowers in place in the vase.
One of my favorite ways to arrange flowers is to put them in a hanging basket.
I’ve added fresh flowers in there before to a basket like this for a party using flower water containers like these on the stems.
You can also add a faux flower arrangement to the basket, too.
I’ve also hung a hanging basket on the door. I tie the basket onto the door knocker, but I’ve also duct-taped a ribbon to the top of the door to hang a basket as well.
You can see one of my favorite door baskets here.
One of my favorite things to use for creative flower arrangements?
These vintage sugar molds.
I bought them downtown at our local antique mall, but I also found super similar ones from Walmart.
I found tiny glasses at the dollar tree and put them in the center of the sugar mold compartments and added flowers.
Looking for even more creative containers for flowers?
I have a few more up my sleeve. Here are some other suggestions:
There are so many creative containers sitting around just waiting for some flowers.
All you need is a little inspiration and a summer afternoon to get started.
And maybe a song to go along with all that flower arranging.
And if you don’t get the words exactly right?
Come sit by me.

Stripes act as a solid in my closet. They are classic, timeless, and always chic. The cut of this top also makes your classic stripe a little bit sexier.

]]>Not surprisingly, most office thermostats are set for the comfort and metabolic rates of a 40-year-old man. As if women don’t have enough professional obstacles to overcome. Sure, let’s throw thermostat sexism into the mix. An overlooked benefit of telecommuting was at least you could control the temperature of your work environment.
In today’s post, I’m not going to give you tips on how to look less like a yeti or Arctic explorer-like because there is no way to do ‘stylish’ once you’ve wrapped yourself up in every available blanket, scarf, and cardigan to keep warm. And while I can’t promise my tips will give you the feeling back in your fingers and toes, they will at least give you some realistic ways to approach layers so they are more versatile for women’s winter and look less like afterthoughts.
In this first look, I styled this MM Lafleur cardigan/jacket jardigan hybrid for warmth. I chose the style because it’s a comfortable and professional piece. More importantly, I selected the color for its versatility. If layering for warmth is a critical component of your work wardrobe, then choosing the colors of these layer pieces is important. This makes a shade like ivory so useful. No matter what you are wearing with the ivory, it will work. The biggest issue with layering at work is that pieces usually look like they don’t belong with your outfits and put a ding in a professional outfit. Choosing a color that will work with whatever you are wearing will not just keep you warm but also keep look purposeful.
I styled the cardigan with a navy top and pants, both from MM. Fleur and finished the outfit with pumps from Sarah Flint and a gold disc necklace from Kenneth Jay Lane.
I am using the same solution in this look as I did in the previous one. I chose a neutral-colored jacket that can be layered over any neutral shade. When it’s blazing hot outside and you don’t want to wear a jacket to and from work, having one on hand that you can throw on with whatever you are wearing will keep your outfit looking work appropriate. Women often assume that a black blazer is the most versatile but black can be a trick go-to shade if you are someone who wears neutral shades beyond this color. What happens if you are wearing navy or brown? Instead, choose from the entire tan, taupe, and beige spectrum, whatever flatters your coloring best, and all will work.
I styled this blazer from Kobi Halprin with a pair of black Veronica Beard trousers, and a blush sweater from The Fold and finished the look with a silver John Hardy necklace and beige flats.
I usually recommend this cardigan from Hobbs to clients who would like to have go-to layering pieces that aren’t obtrusive. Will this cardigan keep you warm while you’re sitting under an AC vent? Probably not, but it will offer some additional warmth without distracting from your overall look. In addition, these cardigans can be helpful when wearing sleeveless dresses and tops and prefer a little bit of arm coverage.
I styled the Hobbs cardigan with a red Frances Valentine dress, Stuart Weitzman sandals, and pearl drop earrings.
If you recall my post from last week, using a button-up shirt in lieu of a cardigan is an option if you want to change things up. Will a button-up shirt give you the same comfy, cozy warmth of that down comforter you’ve dragged to work because setting a campfire is illegal on company property? No, but it’s at least a layer that will look more stylish and isn’t a fire hazard.
I styled this silky cotton relaxed shirt from Everlane over a white cotton tee from J.Crew and a pair of wool Theory pants in heather grey. I finished the outfit with white chunky loafers from M.Gemi, a white belt from Mango, and hoop earrings.
In this last look, I styled the incredibly affordable cotton, cashmere cardigan from Quince in grey for warmth over a basic black dress from Reiss. Back to my tips about choosing layering pieces that have universal use so they don’t look like afterthoughts, I chose grey due to how universal the shade is. To finish the outfit, I added this cognac belt, also from Reiss, beige flats, and a chunky tortoise necklace from J.Crew.
I don’t think these solutions will eliminate your need for a space heater or mountains of layers to keep you warm, but they are sensible ideas for those frigid temperatures that require an extra layer, particularly if you are leaving your desk and don’t want to look like a pile of laundry. Godspeed to you this Women’s Winter season and I will check to see if you’ve finally thawed out by Christmas.

Make 12 Totally British Recipes In The AGA.
I made a batch of English muffins in the AGA using the recipe from our King Arthur British Baking Classics class! I am currently craving sticky toffee pudding though so I might have to make that again.
British recipes I’ve made in the AGA so far:
Turn The Craft Room Into a Proper Studio Space
I’ll have to pick this goal up again in the fall. There is just too much else going on these days. Plus, it’s just too hot to hook or dye wool or any of those other crafty things I usually like doing.
Changes I plan on making to the space:
Hook 100 Rugs {55 of 100 done so far}
I’m currently on rug #56 for the year. Although it will probably take me another week or two to finish at the rate I’m going these days.
Create 15 New Rug Hooking Patterns 11 of 15 completed so far}
My latest rug hooking pattern is called Mable’s Kittens. I’ll be starting a new pattern soon.

Things aren’t going so well on the old homestead these days. In a nutshell, there’s been TOO MUCH rain and it’s ruining everything!
I need to write a proper post on this though and show you everything that’s going wrong. I texted The Duck Lady last night and she says things are pretty rotten at her place too.
We did get the corn planted and are hoping to get the squash in the ground next. If it ever dries out enough.
Empty The Canning Cupboard / Fill The Canning Cupboard
While we’ve been working on eating down the canning cupboard as best we can {we mostly have jams and salsa left to go} I’ve been craving a jar of old fashioned pickled beets lately. Here’s hoping we have a decent beet harvest this year that I can get a few dozen jars canned.
Make $500 Selling Plants, Flowers or Vegetables {I’ve made $60 so far.}
I think I could have made at least $50 – $100 selling bouquets of peonies over at The Duck Lady’s stand the past few weeks but I love them so much, I couldn’t part with any.
I think after I harvest everything from the kitchen garden this fall I might plant the three raised beds all with peonies. I’ve already been looking at the ones Van Engelen sells and have my eye on a few varieties.
So far I’ve sold:
{4} 6-packs of basil @ $3 each = $12
{9} 6- packs of pea starts @$2 each {then I upped the price to $3} = $24.00
{4} Daffodil bouquets @$3 & $4 each = $14.00
{4} Chives @$2 each = $8.00
{1} Basil @$2 each = $2.00
Buy 12 Handmade Items {From 12 Different Artists} 7 down, 5 to go
So far this year I have bought:
Update Every Single Recipe On The Blog To A Printable Format
Recipes… What recipes? I’ve been too busy dreaming about tomatoes.
26 Official Date Days With My Handsome Husband {12 down, 14 to go}
He took me to Moody’s. And YES, ketchup belongs on eggs AND potatoes thank you very much.
Goals already accomplished 2023:
Go On A Solo Adventure. Done
A solo adventure to Fair Isle. I don’t think I could have picked a more unique, isolated and cozy spot to spend a few weeks. I’m already dreaming of going back.
Take An Adult Education Class Done
The Girl and I took a 3 day British Baking Classics course at King Arthur Flour in Norwich, Vermont and had a good time. My favorite thing we made was the sticky toffee pudding.
Set Aside 200 Items For A Yard Sale DONE!
The yard sale was a great success! The Duck Lady and I were both able to get rid of a lot of items we didn’t want and as an added bonus, I only had 1 box of stuff to drop off at the thrift store. Yee-Haw!
How about YOU? How are you coming along with your goals for this year?

From coordinating colors to considering the location and season, we’ll help you create a visually appealing and cohesive look that showcases the love and connection among family members.
Coordinate Colors and Tones
One of the essential aspects of successful family portraits is coordinating the colors and tones of your outfits.
Opt for a color palette that complements each other and suits your family’s style. Solid colors work well and avoid distracting patterns or graphics.
Consider using the color wheel as a guide to select complementary or analogous colors that create visual interest and harmony in your photos.
Pinterest boards and inspiration photos can be helpful in visualizing different color schemes.
Embrace Neutral Colors and Tones
Neutral colors are a timeless choice for family photo outfits as they provide a clean and cohesive look.
Crisp white shirts or cream tones are classic options that work well for the whole family. Pair neutral colors with different shades to add depth and variety to the outfits.
Additionally, neutral colors allow the focus to remain on the faces and expressions of your family members.
Incorporate a Pop of Color
While neutral colors are a safe bet, don’t be afraid to add a pop of color to your family’s outfits.
A vibrant accessory, such as a scarf or statement necklace, can inject personality and visual interest into the photos.
Choose colors that complement your family’s skin tones and the natural surroundings of the outdoor location.
Consider the Season and Location
The season and location of your outdoor family photo session should influence your choice of outfits.
In the summer months, opt for lightweight fabrics and breezy styles to keep everyone comfortable.
Earthy tones and soft colors work well for spring and fall photoshoots, while bold colors can add a vibrant touch to winter portraits.
Consider the backdrop of the outdoor location and select outfits that harmonize with the surroundings.
Dress for the Whole Family
When selecting outfits, it’s important to consider the entire family’s outfits as a whole.
Coordinate colors and styles among family members, ensuring that the outfits complement each other.
Aim for a cohesive look without everyone wearing the exact same thing.
Different shades of the same color or variations within a color palette can create a visually appealing and unified appearance.
Flatter Different Body Shapes
Every family member has a unique body shape, and it’s essential to choose outfits that flatter and highlight their individual features.
Select clothing styles that accentuate the positive aspects of each person’s body shape while providing comfort.
Empire waistlines, A-line dresses, and tailored fits are versatile options that tend to be flattering for various body types.
Consider Personal Style
While it’s important to coordinate outfits, it’s equally important to consider each family member’s personal style.
Encourage everyone to express their personality through their clothing choices. This will result in a more authentic and genuine representation of your family in the photos.
Dress Appropriately for the Weather
When planning an outdoor family photoshoot, consider the weather conditions and dress accordingly.
Layering is a great option for uncertain weather, as it allows for easy adjustments throughout the session.
Long sleeves and jackets can add dimension and variety to the photos, particularly in early fall or cooler climates.
Keep it Timeless
When selecting outfits for your family photos, aim for a timeless look that will stand the test of time.
Avoid trendy or overly fashionable clothing that may look dated in a few years.
Classic pieces and simple styles create a timeless appeal that ensures your photos will remain cherished for years to come.
Don’t Forget the Shoes
While the focus may be on the outfits, don’t forget to pay attention to the choice of shoes.
Dress shoes, boots, or even going barefoot can complement the overall look of the outfits and add a finishing touch to the family’s appearance.

]]>When travellers return home from a holiday, they typically bring cool souvenirs, cherished memories and a broadened perspective on the world.
But sometimes they also come home with a terrible cold, digestive problems or other health issues.
It’s common to get sick when you travel, whether you come down with symptoms during the trip or start feeling bad after the return. But this outcome doesn’t have to be inevitable.
“You can assume that travel will increase the risk of getting sick, and none of us wants to get sick while traveling, said Dr Henry M. Wu, an associate professor at Emory University School of Medicine and director of the Emory TravelWell Center. “It makes sense to take extra precautions we don’t do on a daily basis.”
Below, Wu and other doctors share the things they always do when they travel to avoid getting sick.
“Although Covid-19 is no longer as large of an issue as it was, given that I am in close quarters with the same circulating air on an airplane, I still wear a mask on all flights and in the airport,” said Dr Barbara Bawer, a family medicine physician at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.
“Depending on where you are going, wearing a mask in crowded places is also important.”
She suggested packing at least a couple of masks in case one gets soiled or ruined. High-quality masks like N95s are your best bet for reducing germ transmission in crowded indoor situations.
“I still lament the time I sat on an overnight train in France across from a couple that coughed and sneezed the entire trip – only to get a horrible cold a day later and miss the 48-hour French countryside wedding extravaganza I had travelled so far to attend,” said Dr Sarah Battistich, an emergency medicine specialist at New York University Langone. “Now I routinely wear masks in transit, whether or not there are identifiably ill persons around me.”
Face coverings can also offer protection in multiple ways. “The mask will keep you from touching your nose and mouth with your hands,” said Dr Heather Viola, a primary care physician at Mount Sinai Doctors-Ansonia.
“First and foremost, I constantly wash my hands, always carrying with me hand sanitiser that contains at least 60% alcohol to prevent the spread of germs,” Viola said.
“Many airlines are giving out alcohol-based disinfectant wipes when you board. I use these to clean my seat, headrest, armrests, tray table, and entertainment screen — basically, anything you may touch while sitting in your seat.”
Packing your own alcohol-based disinfecting wipes can also be useful.
“I am a big proponent obviously of hand washing,” Battistich said. “But also trying to limit touching of shared surfaces and therefore limit the risk of coming into contact with bacteria and viruses. I make a game out of it with my daughter to not touch any surface in public bathrooms, including doors and toilet seats.”
“If I’m taking a long flight, try to start out well hydrated and avoid alcohol on the plane,” Battistich said.
Maintaining a healthy water intake was a priority for all the doctors who spoke to HuffPost.
“I always travel with electrolytes ― packets of dissolvable electrolytes ― for water or vitamin water,” Viola said. “This is a good way to keep hydrated with more than just water and help prevent in-flight nausea or dehydration.”
Viola is also a fan of nasal mists and vitamin C tablets prior to boarding.
“The plane cabin is dry, and microorganisms are free to circulate in the air, so before I go on a plane, I take a few vitamin C tablets to boost my immune system and help give my body the ability to fight off airborne germs,” she said.
“Nasal saline spray or nasal mists can also help fight germs as they keep your nasal passages moist, which enhances your body’s own germ-flushing activity.
“You can even apply a small amount of Neosporin or petroleum jelly just inside the nostrils — using a Q-tip if your hands aren’t washed — to create a barrier between you and the airborne germs.”
“If possible, try to travel during non-peak times, which often is the middle of the week and mid-morning or midday, instead of very early or in the evening,” Bawer said. “This may depend on your city, though, so do some research ahead of time.”
Avoiding the biggest crowds and sense of stress is a good way to cut down on your potential exposure to germs, and traveling in the middle of the day typically allows for a full night’s sleep the night before or after your flight.
“Make sure to get adequate rest before your flight and if able, try to sleep while traveling when appropriate,” Bawer said.
“When returning home, give yourself some time to re-adjust back to your daily schedule and environment. Try not to return home at 11pm or midnight and then have to head straight to work the next day.
“Give yourself a few hours or, if able, an entire day at least to recover, get caught up on laundry or grocery shopping or other needed chores, and get plenty of rest.”
Fatigue can impair your immune system, as well as decrease your endurance and negatively impact your mood.
“I’m a big fan of those flat packable travel pillows which support your neck, and I’ve found bringing ear plugs and an eye mask or scarf to keep out the lights is super helpful for getting that extra bit of rest — like that hour at the end of a night flight where you still want to sleep but the flight crew turns the bright overheads on,” Battistich said.
Just as you should prioritise rest to help your immune system, you should also try to reduce stress where possible.
“Don’t overs-chedule your trip to allow time to enjoy yourself and give some flexibility in the itinerary,” Bawer advised. “Stress can induce sickness, especially in a new environment.”
“Eat a well-balanced diet leading up to the trip to get your body and immune system ready to fight anything it comes into contact with and on the day of travel as well,” Bawer said.
“Most people don’t eat as healthy while on vacation but try to incorporate fruits and vegetables with all meals to keep your immune system at the highest level.”
She always packs healthy snacks and a refillable water bottle to ensure she gets the nutrients she needs during her travels.
“Often we don’t have time to eat, especially with flights being delayed or late, and we either skip meals or grab something quick, which is rarely healthy,” Bawer noted.
“I make sure I am up-to-date on vaccines before travel,” Wu said. “Flu and Covid-19 are so common among travellers, and even a mild case can ruin a trip.
“Also, for international travel, there are additional vaccines that might be recommended or required, or even malaria prophylaxis for some areas. I suggest travelers check the CDC [Centers for Disease Control Prevention] travel website or see a travel medicine specialist for advice.”
In addition to getting the necessary travel vaccines ahead of time, you may want to procure special medications in advance.
“Consider getting a prescription for diarrhoea medicine if traveling to another country where traveler’s diarrhoea may be an issue,” Bawer advised.
“If traveling to another country, avoid drinking their water — this includes anything washed with local water like salad and fruit. Focus on eating foods that have a shell and don’t need washing and drink bottled water. Also, use this to brush your teeth. This can help to avoid traveler’s diarrhoea from developing.”
Packing an over-the-counter anti-diarrhoea medicine like Imodium is another good idea, especially when traveling internationally.
“If I’m uncertain about particular meals, I try to stick to foods that have been fully cooked and are served hot, avoiding raw and undercooked foods,” Viola added.
“Wear sunscreen daily,” Bawer urged.
Whether at home or on vacation, you should apply (and reapply) a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 every day. Keeping up with your sun protection regimen is especially important if you’ll spend a lot of time outside during your travels.
“Sunburn and heat-related illnesses are some of the most easily preventable causes of a ruined vacation,” Battistich said. “Don’t forget sunscreen, long sleeve shirts ― linen is great for hot climates ― and hats. The bigger and more packable the hat, the better.“
“If it’s an outdoorsy trip or I’m going to tropical areas, I make sure to pack bug repellent,” Wu said. “Mosquitoes, ticks and other biting bugs can transmit many infections.”
Ensure your sunscreen complies with local regulations and check the CDC’s recommendations for effective products.
“It isn’t always easy to find these things on the fly, so preparing in advance will eliminate the chance I am caught off guard,” Wu added.
“I also bring over-the-counter medications that I will have on hand in case I start to feel unwell,” Viola said.
She packs acetaminophen for pain or fever, ibuprofen for pain, an antihistamine like Benadryl and Pepto-Bismol in case of stomach upset.
“My doctor’s travel kit included some preventatives and some emergency rescue meds,” Battistich said, listing many of the same medications, as well as anti-nausea medications and remedies like SeaBands, ginger packets, and aromatherapy sticks.
“There is evidence that taking Pepto-Bismol tablets before and during travel can help reduce in the risk of traveler’s diarrhoea,” she added. “I also back very basic wound kits with Band-Aids, antibiotic cream, and if going to a hot and humid climate, or when hiking and backpacking, I will also often bring an antifungal cream.”
Q: Summer beach hat that packs well.
A: People rave about this one from Janessa Leone. I also personally love this striped canvas one but know it’s not for everyone. Would be cute with a white swimsuit! Finally, though I do often pack sunhats and love the overall aesthetic, I’m much more likely to wear a ballcap…
I did want to mention that I’ve also heard people rave about this tote, which comes with a built-in straw hat carrier, though you can get the look for less with this, or upgrade with this monogrammable Weezie one.
Q: Casual white jacket.
A: I love the look of a utility jacket like this or this (the latter is technically off-white/bone colored), although this fleece (sweatshirt-material) topper also turned my head as a cute top layer. For something sportier to layer over athletic wear / athleisure, I really love this $37 style. The bracelet cuffs are so cute (and handy, if you want to push the sleeves up and have them stay put). You can see me in mine here.
Q: The Hay Adams for the 4th.
A: Oo, have fun! I would wear a patriotic cocktail dress like this, this, or this. More Americana summer outfit ideas here.
Q: Bridesmaid dress with light pink background and different colored flowers — floor length.
A: Oo, tricky one! A few options at different price points: this Bardot, this Reformation, this Bernadette, this Saloni, and this V. Chapman. This Self-Portrait is technically more midi-length (tea length?) but might get the bride’s approval?
Q: Tote that fits a laptop.
A: Cuyana makes a great workhorse bag for, well, work. The zippered top is clutch for travel/commute, and it holds up really well. Honestly can’t believe the price — I’ve had one for years. If you’re looking for more of an investment, I would try the Celine Cabas (depends on size of your laptop), Khaite Amelia, or Bottega Arco. I remember the ultra-chic Becky Malinsky claiming the Arco was THE perfect work bag.
Q: Summer family photo outfits for the whole family. Daughter 19 months and son four months.
A: So cute! I would put my daughter in one of the fabulous, heirloom-quality diaper sets from La Coqueta, like this or this, and baby boy in something like this or one of the little La Coqueta knit short sets. I would wear a dress like this, this, or (splurge) this — something that feels ethereal, painterly, but not too over-dressed. Don’t worry about being matchy-matchy. Just pick pieces in the same general color family.
Q: Classic fall coat for wearing to Paris. An early fall version of the travel series?
A: I love this request and will begin to keep my eyes out for chic fall finds for European travel, but not seeing too much out there for the fall yet! In terms of coat, now is a good time to buy last season’s standouts on sale. You must consider this ultra-luxe Toteme, currently 40% off. WOW. Understated elegance. This scarf-trim Toteme (still not on sale) was also crazy popular last season and would be a fabulous statement to bring with. Also love a tweedy option like this. Imagine over trousers, denim; layered with a bit of fair isle peeking through, or with head to toe black.
Q: July in Vail! What evening outfits work that are cute/warm enough?
A: I was just chatting with a friend heading out to Vail about this. We both thought that dress from Doen or The Great with clogs or booties and a cardigan like this or this was the answer. Alternately, your favorite jeans and a fun top like this with clogs/booties and cardigan! Also, this would be such a fun statement (currently heavily discounted) with jeans/white tee/booties.
Q: Everyday bag — crossbody or shoulder. Two young kids but not a full diaper tote.
A: I really love the options from Mansur Gavriel. This shoulder one has lots of space for the essentials and just looks fabulous, and I’m dying over these woven ones. I like the way both drawstrings closed so you can cinch everything in place when bending over to tend to a little one. This one from L’Uniforme is similar but a little less expensive. For something more casual, have seen a few moms at my daughter’s school with this Naghedi crossbody. Seems highly functional, durable, and cute for a sportier look.
Q: Fun sunglasses for my bachelorette beach weekend – under $50.
A: Have you seen these $12 ones from Amazon? They’re inspired by a style from Loewe and SO fun. Come in great colors. I bought them in yellow, as seen here. I also own these fun oval ones in two colors. Really fab. I first saw them on my girlfriend Alison Kenworthy. We were having a coffee date and I ordered them right from the cafe table!

]]>Tenugui is a sort of traditional Japanese towel, literally meaning “hand wiper,” but often used for other purposes than simply wiping one’s hands. Historically, it was an all-purpose piece of cloth; some wore it as a scarf, some wrapped bento boxes with it, while it was also used in place of a belt, bandage, apron, and diaper.
One of Japan’s oldest continuously running businesses, Eirakuya was originally established in 1615 by fabric merchant Hosotsuji Ihe’e, a favorite of Oda Nobunaga—one of the most illustrious figures in Japanese history. The shop’s name derives from Eiraku Tsūhō, a Ming dynasty coin that widely circulated back then, so common that Nobunaga adopted it as one of his crests. Men of the Hosotsuji clan also wore the coin crest to show their loyalty to the samurai warlord as they joined his war to unify Japan in the 1570s.
Initially dealing in silk fabrics, Eirakuya eventually shifted to selling cotton as it became more and more popular in Japan. The business proved to be quite a success, and by the modernized Meiji era (1868-1912) it had become a huge company with hundreds of people in employment. Today, it boasts nine shops around Kyoto and continues to produce a wide variety of tenugui for modern consumers, some with unique, cute, and humorous designs by its CEO, Hosotsuji Ihe’e XIV.
In 2018, the Hosotsuji Ihee Museum was founded by the Eirakuya company to showcase the diverse art and craftsmanship of tenugui as well as to archive the history of the shop. It exhibits Eirakuya’s past designs and offers a glimpse into its history, as well as into the future of the art.
The most unique part of the museum, though, might be its ticket system. Upon entering and purchasing a ticket, a visitor will be given a white tenugui with a simplified calligraphy reading “Hosotsuji Ihee Museum” printed on it. Then, perhaps to your shock, the reception clerk will cut a narrow strip off the ticket-tenugui. It does not fall apart from such a small tear, however, and it’s only a display of the durability of the intricately woven tenugui. You can take this sustainability-friendly ticket back home as a souvenir and use it for whatever purpose it may serve.

Think about it this way: When you purchase a black dress, you’re getting a dress that can be worn year-round—not just during one season. So, in the long run, it can be a more worthwhile investment piece than one you know you’ll only wear three months out of the year. Plus, black is trending this year as one of 2023’s top colors, which includes head-to-toe black in the summertime.
Of course, wearing a black dress in the summer comes with some all-important styling decisions to make it feel seasonally appropriate. Here’s what to wear with a black summer dress.
We’ve all got a pair of go-to summer sandals (or a few, but who’s counting?). A black summer dress and sandals are a match made in heaven, as the sandals ensure that the outfit leans summer-y (rather than something like a pair of loafers, which would lean a bit more chilly-weather appropriate). The beauty of choosing sandals to go with your black dress is that any color or style will match it to a T.
The summertime version of a jacket, a button-up works as a layer on top of all your favorite outfits if you’re looking for some more coverage (or some added warmth if you know you’re going to be in the AC). A button-up can also help to make your black summer dress appropriate for an office OOTD.
If you’re ready to channel your inner coastal cowgirl, cowboy boots should be your footwear of choice with your black dress. It’s an unexpected choice, which makes it one that’ll pay off in styling points.
No summer outfit is complete without a pair of sunnies. Your favorite pair will do, but if you ask us, a white pair to contrast against your black dress will be extra-chic.
Denim jackets are always in style, and lucky for you, there are about a million and one ways to wear them. When paired with a summer dress, the vibes are immaculate for a sunset BBQ or late-night stroll on the beach.
When the sun isn’t sweltering, opt for a blazer over your black summer dress. A linen one will compliment the summer vibe, and will make it wearable for office days and evenings out alike.
You know that feeling when your outfit is complete but it feels like something is missing? That can be overcome by adding a silk scarf to your look. Wrapped in your hair, around your wrist, or along the handle of your purse, a silk scarf can weave its way into any great summer outfit and totally complete it. When worn with a black flowy dress, a silk scarf will really pop, making it a perfect look for a date night out on the town.
A simple black cami maxi dress pairs perfectly when worn with other simple-yet-chic elevated basics. A stellar pair of flat sandals and pair of statement sunglasses make all the difference when it comes to summer accessorizing. A maxi dress like this can be thrown on after a day at the beach, or worn to stroll around during a stunning summer sunset. Throw your hair back into a simple bun and you’ve got your casual summer uniform nailed down.
Sheer motifs have been popping up everywhere lately, so why not go all out this summer and wear a completely sheer dress? How risqué it is will be completely determined by the undergarments you pair it with. You can lean into the sexiness with a bikini or matching underwear set (especially if you’re heading to a concert), or keep it easy with a bodysuit or slip dress. Take your accessorizing to the next level and pair your sheer black dress with shiny metallic accessories and knee-high western boots. Eras Tour outfit, anyone?
Summer just isn’t summer without a reliable LBD you can throw on on days you can’t figure out what to wear. For the days when the mornings and evenings have a bit more chill in the air, grab your favorite button-up shirt to throw on over your black dress. Whether yours is crisp white or adorned with stripes, this look is one you can return to time after time. Opt for sandals on warmer days or sneakers if you’ve got a lot of running around to do.
Sweetheart necklines, off-the-shoulder sleeves, and drop-waist details come to mind when thinking of romantic summer dresses, and they happen to look particularly good in a shade of black. A black summer dress in one of the aforementioned silhouette is perfect to have on hand for the more special events on your summer calendar, like friends’ birthday dinners or date nights out. Pair yours with your favorite slide sandals to keep it casual, or opt for heeled sandals if you want to dress it up.
It’s no surprise here that we’d suggest wearing your go-to blazer with a black summer dress. It’ll take casual and more formal dresses alike to a whole new level of chic. Play up the workwear vibe and grab a clutch and heels to finish it off, or keep it casual and cool with sneakers and a crossbody bag. Pro tip: If you’re headed to an office this summer, a black dress and blazer is a combo you can rely on all season long.

]]>And because you want to maximize every minute of fun-in-the-sun time, you definitely don’t want to be wasting time digging through your closet to pick out an outfit. That’s when having a summer capsule wardrobe is the time-saving hack that will make getting ready so much easier—and is sustainable to boot. By establishing a rotation of go-to pieces, you’ll eliminate decision fatigue and get more wear out of all your favorite looks (fast fashion, who?).
There are just a few tips to keep in mind before getting started: First, if sustainability is the goal, don’t rush out and buy all new pieces. Mindful closet advocate Sally Garcia recommends shopping your own closet first to unearth any hidden gems and identify what your needs are. Then, you can fill in with updated pieces (either bought new or thrifted) to round out your capsule wardrobe.
Just remember to keep versatility in mind, and only add pieces that coordinate with the rest of your closet, Garcia says. Doing so will allow you to mix and match with ease, and will prevent you from having to buy or thrift as many pieces in the future. Another hack for getting the most bang for your buck? Checking the fabric label for long-lasting materials such as cotton.
“Cotton is my favorite fabric,” Garcia says. “It breathes well, it wears in beautifully, and while you should mend and wear your clothes as much as possible, cotton is one of the easiest fabrics to [biodegrade]. I also love that cotton is easy to dye, giving that much more life to your articles of clothing.”
You just need eight key pieces to create looks for days. Keep reading to snag the staples you’re missing from Garcia’s list of suggestions (after you shop your own closet, of course).
The first item that’s a must-have in Garcia’s summer capsule wardrobe? “Without a doubt a breezy cotton dress,” she says. Not only will a dress with a simple silhouette (like this stunning sage one) help you beat the heat this summer, but you can easily dress it up or down—it’ll still look effortlessly chic whether you pair it with sneakers or heels.
If your fave summer outfit “hack” is to go with something you can slip on ASAP so you can enjoy the weather quicker, you know how important having a fun mini-dress can be—especially for the days when a maxi dress is a tad too warm. Try to rely on something in a basic color (like this adorable white one), and add in your personality with the detailing (like the lace-up front). Then just throw it on and go catch some sun.
Shorts are a summer must, especially for Garcia living in the Los Angeles heat. “I love a good pair of non-denim shorts,” Garcia says. “If styled right, they can totally work in a more relaxed work setting.” The possibilities of where to wear these breathable—thanks to their lightweight cotton twill fabric—shorts are endless. Try pairing them with sandals and a blazer for a dinner out, or throw them on with a t-shirt for your hot girl walk.
If you’re looking for a not-so-sweaty layering piece, Garcia recommends a light cotton coat, like this blazer that will make any summer outfit seem more polished. Plus, its neutral coloring means you can pretty much throw it on top of anything without thinking twice *and* you’ll definitely still get compliments on it, thanks to the cool tonal stripes.
A jumpsuit is another easy-to-throw-on base layer that provides some versatile edginess to your capsule wardrobe. Whether you’re brunching or going to a brewery, it will become an effortless essential. “It’s a whole outfit in one article of clothing,” Garcia says. “What could be more perfect than that.”
While a scarf might not be the first thing you would associate with summer, Garcia says it’s worth investing in a nice lightweight one since it can be one of the most multi-use pieces of clothing in your closet. Wear it as a shawl to dinner, as a headscarf to the vintage market, or as a top for a night out—it’ll look good in all those scenarios and more.
Another one of Garcia’s non-negotiables when it comes to a capsule closet is a colorful button-up, like this pretty purple one that gives off “I’m ready to chill out” vibes. The oversized fit will keep you feeling classically stylish, no matter where you are. Garcia recommends wearing it not only as a shirt but also as a beach cover-up or a shacket.
Everyone needs a great pair of denim shorts for ultimate summer vibes. And if you don’t already have some, this flattering, high-waisted pair will go with just about any of your favorite breezy summer tops and will last you for years thanks to their 100 percent cotton fabric.
The brand’s timeless yet unique designs and flattering lines work on just about any body shape or size. And the high quality fabrics; wool, silk, cashmere, will be a building block of your wardrobe for years to come.
One of the wonderful things about Eileen Fisher is the flexibility of the collection. Every item mixes and matches together to create a truly effortless wardrobe.
And since the clothing is so well made, you’ll keep these essentials in your wardrobe for years to come.

Eileen Fisher’s pieces are very much inspired by natural textures and elements. Texture is great for adding extra interest to your outfit, and you should think about adding different textures into your outfit. For example, with the pleated top and smooth leather bag (below).

One of the things we love about Eileen Fisher, as well as the quality and design, of course, is the inclusiveness.

Eileen Fisher is a master at the lightweight jacket, making it the perfect place to look if you want a summer cover-up. Choose a classic blazer, or a shirt style jacket. If you don’t want the structure of a jacket, opt for the sequin cardigan (below) instead.

The collection has so many pants to choose from. You will find skinny and cropped styles as well as straight and wide-legged pairs.

Organic Cotton Denim Straight Jean – Stretch Jersey Knit Pant with Slits – Crinkled Organic Linen Stripe Wide-Leg Pant – Airy Organic Cotton Twill Shorts
One of the most versatile pieces you can have in your capsule wardrobe is a dress in neutral or flattering bold hue that does wonders for your body shape.
This is the case with the Eileen Fisher dresses below that can go from day to evening and colder to warmer temperatures with ease depending on how you wear them.
The great thing about Eileen Fisher’s dresses is that they are very well made and a blank canvas. You can wear the same dress in so many different ways either for day or night, for summer or for winter.
You could add a belt, a scarf, some statement jewelry, sneakers or heels and create a huge variety of different outfits.
Eileen Fisher dresses work for any body shape and they also be a fantastic option if you are looking to hide a belly. If you prefer separates, wear the linen shirt with any of the tops from above.

Just like the rest of the brand, Eileen Fisher’s shoes and boots are crafted from the highest quality materials.

]]>First of all, what exactly is a gala? Well, it’s a formal event that usually involves some entertainment and a dinner. You might, for example be heading to a charity gala that features a fundraising auction, or maybe an awards event.
Whatever the reason for the event, a gala is a great opportunity to get dressed up and embrace the glamour of the occasion. This is your chance to have some fun with style!
While all galas tend to be formal, they don’t all have the same dress code. Take a look at your invitation to see what it says. Below are some of the options.
White tie is the most formal attire, so you’ll have to take extra special care if it says this on your invitation. In this case, a floor length dress is the best option.
Sandra @lapecosapreciosa above looks beautiful in her metallic asymmetric dress.
Get her look with this similar sequin dress (other options here and here), sandals and hoop earrings.
This gives you a little more leeway when it comes to what you wear. You can choose a long dress, cocktail dress, a jumpsuit, or even a pants suit.
Lizzy @whatlizzyloves above (read her style interview here) opts for a dress that combines the look of a shorter dress and a maxi dress, thanks to the lace styling.
Steal her look with this similar lace dress (another option here), sandals and clutch.
In this case, you will probably prefer to wear a shorter dress length, at the knee or a midi length rather than a long option.
Sheree @shesheshow above shows how you could opt for a dress with a high-low hem.
Recreate her outfit with this similar wrap dress (another option here), sandals and earrings.
Perhaps your gala has a dress code, or a theme. Think about the world famous Met Gala – there’s a new theme each year. If there is a theme, then have fun with it.
Souri @fabfemme_australia above (read her style interview here) shows off a look that would be perfect for a daytime gala, or a day at the races.
Check out this top (other options here and here) that you can wear with this similar skirt (another option here), pumps, handbag and fascinator.
Don’t feel constrained to a dress if you are more comfortable in pants. You could opt for a wide, palazzo style, a pants suit or a tuxedo jacket.
Wendy @fashionoverfifty.wendy above shows how you could dress up a classic black suit.
Steal her look with this similar shirt, blazer, pants, sandals, clutch, brooch and belt.
Now let’s move onto some specific outfit choices for your gala event.
A dress is the most classic choice for a formal gala, but a jumpsuit is also a great choice. The overlay jumpsuit (below) combines the look of a dress and a jumpsuit. Metallic shades will add a touch of glamour, while red will get you noticed.

COS The Silk Scarf Dress – Sam Edelman Bianka Slingback Pump – Olga Berg Gabby Metallic Hot Fix Crystal Clutch – Ettika Crystal Drop Earrings
Depending on the weather, and whether you want to cover your upper arms, you will want a jacket or cover-up. A blazer is always a smart choice. To elevate your blazer look, opt for a tuxedo style. Or try a dramatic cover up like the tulle blazer (below), which has the look of a jacket and a skirt, so would look good over pants.
If you only want to cover your upper arms, wear a shawl, scarf or wrap.
There are more stylish cover-up ideas in this article on how to cover up a formal dress.

If you’re opting for separates, what top should you choose? Well, because separates can look more casual than a dress, make sure you choose a really special top. Look out for luxurious fabrics, draping, glamorous shapes, and sequins. You could choose a white shirt and elevate your look with statement jewelry.

If you’re choosing a pair of pants or a skirt to go with your top, then a pair of wide leg pants are a glamorous choice. You can see why in our article on the best wide leg pants and how to wear them.
When it comes to choosing skirts, look for silk, satin, sequins, and a maxi or below the knee length.

Alice + Olivia Everly Tulle Blazer – KOBI HALPERIN Mila Sleeveless Stretch Silk Blouse – Alice + Olivia Dylan Bootcut Pants – Steve Madden Elina Crystal Bow Ballet Flat – Nina Billow Art Deco Frame Clutch – SAVVY CIE JEWELS Halo Stud Earrings
Heels are always a classic choice. Choose metallics, neutral shades, or pick shoes that match your dress. If you think you’ll be uncomfortable being on your feet during the event, you could choose a pair of glamorous flats instead.

Alice + Olivia Denny Crystal Trim Blazer – COS The V-Neck Linen Maxi Dress – Jewel Badgley Mischka Christen Block Heel Sandal – Olga Berg Ellie Crystal Mesh Bag – SAVVY CIE JEWELS Halo Stud Earrings
Accessories always elevate any outfit, but they are particularly important when you are creating an outfit for a special occasion. You will want a clutch bag to fit in your essentials. Then choose statement earrings, bracelets and necklaces.

Below, you can see how you can put your gala outfits together. You can easily mix and match to create different looks if you have a number of events to attend this year. You could, for example, create an all-red look with the red dress, wrap and clutch bag. Or, you could wear the white or black blazers over any of the outfits.

]]>In 2018, we wrote an article on designing your personal uniform. The guidelines are simple: quality over quantity, style over fashion, and function and versatility above all. Start with cleaning out your closet, orient your uniform around what’s left, and consider a shopping hiatus to ensure that, as you begin to purchase items with a personal uniform in mind, you’re cultivating a wardrobe that will stand the test of time.
But where does one begin, really? The personal uniform has become a popular concept, but many of us have tried to design our own personal uniform only to find that we tire of it over time, or it no longer suits us after just a couple of months. The social distancing brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic and the subsequent changes to work arrangements has meant that, for many of us, our day-to-day is more casual than it was before. That, or we did so many closet cleanouts over those months that we’re now left with only one or two outfits we can confidently wear out of the house.
We’re diving deeper into the personal uniform to help you curate a wardrobe that works for you: you’ll save time getting dressed every morning, you’ll save money on the impulse purchase you might wear once before deciding it was a mistake, and you’ll have several reliable outfits that you feel good in no matter the occasion.
Articulating your personal style requires that you know how you want to look based on what you already look good in. In the Financial Times, Lauren Indvik writes that ‘pinpointing your personal style is about finding the (probably rather narrow) overlap between what suits you and what you like.’ A good place to start is to take stock of the outfits you already reach for again and again. These are likely pieces you feel good in. Indvik suggests taking photos of these outfits to keep in a folder on your phone. You might be surprised by the pieces populating this album over time. This tends to be a more effective practice than creating a vision board based on images taken from websites and magazines because you’re working with clothing that works on you, not on the model being paid to wear it.
Indvik also entreats us to ‘repeat, repeat, repeat.’ Buying similar shapes and cuts of clothing makes the accessories you own more functional. Indvik buys or hems her skirts to be the same length as her pants so that her shoes go with a greater number of items. My personal uniform is a white tee shirt, a pair of well-tailored trousers, and a long jacket. I have several of each item in various colors, but they are cut similarly so that I can wear boots or flats, add a statement necklace depending on the occasion, and choose a weight of both trouser and jacket that suits the season. Your personal uniform might be a long-sleeved dress, a blazer over blue jeans, or a black sweater over white Levi 501s with a Charvet scarf wrapped around your neck, as is editor and stylist Tonne Goodman’s.
Tonne Goodman, Editor and Stylist
For inspiration, you can also look over the websites of brands you love and from which you’ve bought and kept clothes in the past. Several brands are notable for their contemporary and minimalist silhouettes that can become the versatile staples of your personal uniform:
These lines encourage uniform dressing, in that they reissue the same pieces over their collections, so you will be able to find what has become your go-to blazer in a new color appropriate for spring and in yet another come fall.
Some of these brands even offer styling or at least the suggestion of styling:
Net – A – Porter has curated these fifteen pieces.
Tibi founder Amy Smilovic has started offering classes on Instagram based around her ethos of ‘creative pragmatism.’
The Frankie Shop features a page on its website called the ‘Everyday Formula,’ that pulls pieces from their collection to help you ‘build a contemporary wardrobe that works for you.’
Classic tote $248
Cuyana’s tagline is ‘fewer, better,’ promoting the practice of investing in pieces you can love for a long time over cycling through fast fashion to keep up with trends that come and go.
If you like Glamour magazine’s personal uniform, they have done the shopping for you and found 23 “wardrobe essentials”.
As Tonne Goodman writes, a uniform gives you ‘one less thing to have to worry about, so you can be more creative.’ It seems Anna Wintour, Steve Jobs, and Albert Einstein would agree.

]]>Do you love jeans and the denim look? Are jeans your go-to for a casual and even casual-chic look? I love jeans, denim jackets, denim skirts, denim dresses, and tops. I don’t plan to stop wearing them because I’m over 50. Don’t let anyone tell you that you shouldn’t wear denim as you get older.
Denim is a sturdy cotton twill fabric, typically blue in color, that has been used for centuries in clothing for producing workwear, overalls, and jackets. Jeans, on the other hand, are pants made from denim fabric that have become a staple of modern fashion. Simply put, denim is the fabric and jeans are the pants made of denim.
The origins of denim can be traced back to the city of Nîmes in France, where a fabric known as “serge de Nîmes” was produced in the 16th century. Basically, De Nîmes (meaning “from Nîmes”) became denim as we know it today. This fabric was then a blend of wool and silk and was known for its durability and strength. It was later exported to England, where it was used to make trousers for sailors and workers.
In the 19th century, the cotton version of denim was developed in the United States, where it became popular for use in workwear clothing such as overalls and jackets. The fabric was particularly popular with miners and cowboys due to its durability and ability to withstand harsh working conditions.
The term “jeans” is believed to have originated from the French word for Genoa, Italy, where a similar fabric called “jean” was produced. However, it was not until the late 19th and early 20th centuries that denim jeans as we know them today began to emerge.
In 1873, Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis, two clothing manufacturers from San Francisco, patented a new design for work pants made from denim fabric with riveted pockets. These pants were initially known as “waist overalls,” but later became known as “jeans.”
Over the years, jeans grew in popularity and became a symbol of American culture and rebellion. They were worn by Hollywood stars such as James Dean in the 1950s and became a staple of the counterculture movement of the 1960s and 1970s.
Today jeans can be seen on fashion runways and are worn by people of all ages. They can be found in a wide variety of styles, colors, and designs and have become a staple in almost everyone’s wardrobe.
Denim is not constrained to workwear anymore. From the funky bell bottoms of the 70s to the grungy ripped looks of the 90s, jeans have certainly morphed through the years and many looks have come and gone and come and gone again. For example, bell-bottomed jeans could be seen on practically all the runways this season.
There are so many ways we can wear our jeans – high waist, low waist, dark indigo, washed out, cropped, skinny, loose-fitting, and embellished, to name a few.
Here are some ideas for outfits styled for different occasions.
Jeans nowadays are mostly designed with stretch, like spandex, that makes them super comfortable to wear while going about your day.
I’m not a super fan of ripped jeans but they are quite trendy at the moment. Without going excessive on the rips, it’s possible to find a pair of jeans that is fresh and modern looking. Pair it with a fun printed top and comfortable shoes for an easy everyday look.
Also, don’t be afraid to pair jeans with a denim top. I love the total denim look!

Pride Month is a time for celebrating how far the LGBTQ+ community has come despite living in a world that still has a long way to go to ensure the safety and comfort of all people. Although June is traditionally known as Pride Month, learning about queer history and uplifting queer love is not limited to one month out of the year. Truly, it is an all day, every day way of life.
So how and where does a glow-up fit into all of this? And what is a glow-up anyway?
Social media allows users to share a proverbial highlight reel of their lives, celebrating accomplishments and achievements. According to Later, “A ‘glow-up’ is a slang term used to describe a significant transformation, typically in physical appearance, that is perceived as an improvement. It’s the process of turning yourself into a better version of yourself and becoming more confident, attractive, and successful.”
Or, to put it in the words of the immortal queer icon David Bowie, aging “is an extraordinary process whereby you become the person that you always should have been.”
Historically speaking, members of the LGBTQ+ community have not always been allowed the time and space for such a transformation. Far too many individuals have lost their lives to senseless violence fuelled by irrational hatred and discriminatory practices, suicide and self-harm, government negligence and other circumstances. It is indeed a blessing to see influencers like The Old Gays gaining a steady and dedicated fan base on social media because they are living proof of the resilience and courage of the LGBTQ+ community.
For those who had and still have to fight to live their lives authentically, a glow-up on social media transcends the confines of a short video to remind those watching that, in the words of the late, great Stephen Sondheim, “I’m still here.”
It was an honour to interview a diverse group of bright and beautiful souls to learn about each of their personal journeys of self-discovery.

How do you identify on the gender spectrum? Non-binary
How do you identify on the sexuality spectrum? Demi-sexual panromantic
Growing up, did you know you were queer? How/when did you discover this?
I always knew I was at the very least bisexual. I’ve liked anime since I can remember, so it was pretty telling when I was (respectfully) into both the waifus AND husbandos.
What was your personal coming out experience? Were you met with any adversity in the process?
I’ve always been very loudly out. My family is very conservative and religious, so I was met with a lot of pushback. I think they just assumed it was a phase for the longest time, but now they’re starting to come around to the realisation that this is just who I am. They’ve recently told me they just want me to be happy, so that’s a step forward that I can appreciate.
How do you utilise the mediums of style, fashion and beauty to live as the most authentic version of yourself?
It changes pretty frequently for me, but I’m currently utilising a wardrobe and jewellery that is more masc-presenting to make me feel like my most authentic self. Lately, I’ve been wearing a lot of comfy streetwear and anime shirts with a binder underneath. And in the last few years, I’ve gotten back into cosplay! I believe that fashion can be a sign of protest, and that pieces of cloth don’t have a gender.

How do you identify on the sexuality spectrum? Bisexual
Growing up, did you know you were queer? How/when did you discover this?
I had a girlfriend when I was 3 years old and my mom thought I was a lesbian. Then, I kissed a neighbour boy under the table when I was 5 years old. I didn’t know I could be queer until I was 13!
When I was 14, the year was 2010 and I’d heard offhandedly about trans women on Oprah and, of course, characterisations in movies and TV shows. I got on Tumblr at some point (around 2011), which was when I learned a lot more about the community. I then realised I was non-binary. I was still dressing completely feminine though. In fact, hyperfemme: Retro outfits and red lipstick every day. Every night, I slept in curlers and a scarf.
At 17, I went to a Youth Queer Group. We were filling out forms for the list of attendees and it asked for pronouns. I said to someone, “I want to put he/him. But I’m wearing a dress,” and whoever it was said, “Boys can wear dresses!” I put He/Him and the rest is history.
What was your personal coming out experience? Were you met with any adversity in the process?
Coming out to my mom as bi was easy, as she herself is bi. Coming out as trans was a lot more complex and still is. By age 19, I had completely stopped wearing feminine clothing. I decided I wanted to be taken seriously as a transmasculine person. I started identifying as a trans man so that I could be called by my proper pronouns. That was July 2016. In July 2017 I got on hormones and in July 2018 I got my top surgery. I had to come out at work (a grocery store) to about 60 people. There were very mixed reactions. When I started HRT, I started using the men’s room. At one point one of my leads came up to me to ask about it and that was one of the scariest moments I’d had up until that point.
Nowadays I “pass” as a cisgender male. When I tell people I’m trans, they’re surprised. A lot of straight men decide they’re interested in me at that moment as an “experiment” of sorts, which isn’t cool. I don’t tell most people.
How do you utilise the mediums of style, fashion and beauty to live as the most authentic version of yourself?
I’ve been dressing up in costumes as long as I can remember. I used to wear a Dorothy dress from “The Wizard of Oz” every day. I was homeschooled, so that wasn’t a problem. I’ve always been into fashion, picking my own outfits since I could communicate about it. Life is a stage for me. I used to read a lot of fashion blogs and now I’m on Instagram and YouTube a lot!
Edith Head and Colleen Atwood are two of my biggest inspirations for my costumes. I also sew! I like to wear button-ups a lot, with my shirt tucked in. I usually have my shirt tucked in, whatever I’m wearing. I’ve been into business casual since I was 9 years old (not sure why). Nowadays, my outfits are more ’70s than ever. I’ve been doing drag consistently since June 2021. I was a part of the “Rocky Horror” community from the age of 11, which has also been a huge influence on me as a person altogether. It gave me a reason to practice my makeup skills and I am now a certified makeup artist. I also perform original poetry and music, do drag and sing karaoke. Self-expression is very important to me!

Growing up, did you know you were queer? How/when did you discover this?
I didn’t have a word for it until I was a teenager. Nonetheless, I’ll give two separate anecdotes on the matter:
1) Disney. Specifically Lulubelle from the short film “Bongo,” and Ariel from “The Little Mermaid.” Four-year-old me would daydream a lot wishing I was Bongo and/or Eric. The scene where Ariel turned into a human and shoots out of the water is definitely a core memory for me. I’m pretty sure I wore out my VHS copy watching that movie.
2) I don’t have any recollection of this, but my mom told me a story that when I was very young, I was upset I wasn’t born a boy. I asked her if she could go to the store to buy me a penis so she can sew it onto me. When she explained it doesn’t work that way, I proceeded to grab an empty toilet paper roll and stuff it into my underwear. I didn’t really hear the words gay, lesbian or bisexual until I was in my teens. I was out to my friends at a relatively young age, but I didn’t tell my family until about a year later.
What was your personal coming out experience? Were you met with any adversity in the process?
I came out at 14, which was terrifying at the time because Matthew Shepard was murdered the year before. I don’t remember exactly what I said, but I do remember giving my mom a handwritten letter. I left it in front of her bedroom door before I rushed off to school. I remembered being a nervous wreck the entire day. I was worried because my best friend had a terrible experience coming out. Their mom disowned them, and they were sent to live with their grandmother. Coming from a Catholic upbringing, I thought this was a real possibility. After school, I went to hang out at their house. Eventually, my sister did pick me up, and I immediately ran to my room the moment we got home. My mom sensed how terrified I was, and decided to email me saying that she loves me and that I’ll always be her daughter. I’m incredibly lucky to have the loving and accepting family that I have. I’ve heard a lot of stories where that isn’t the case. I never came out to my dad; my sibling outed me by accident. It was several years later, and they asked him, “Dad you know (civilian name) is gay, right?” To which he replied, “Well, duh. ”
How do you utilise the mediums of style, fashion and beauty to live as the most authentic version of yourself?
When I first discovered the word, “drag king,” it became the catalyst for both exploring my gender identity and strengthening my skillset as a stage performer. In the early days, I would wait until my family was asleep, then use hair gel to adhere hair to my face. Over time, I did gain the confidence to perform as my alter ego out in public. The first time was in my college theatre class, then working with a local nonprofit’s annual drag fundraiser, then eventually getting the attention of various drag and burlesque producers all throughout the city.
I didn’t come out as a trans person until I was in my mid-20s. Before that, I was identifying as a “butch lesbian.” At the time, I thought being a transgender person was limited to a binary (only FTM or MTF). Learning the word non-binary was a lightbulb moment for me. For as long as I could remember, I never thought of myself as exclusively feminine or masculine. Dressing masculine when I was younger was used as a shield to protect myself from getting hit on by men. These days, dressing masculine is paying homage to my grandfather, who ran a haberdashery after he returned home from WWII. In every photo I ever saw of him, he was always impeccably dressed.

Pronouns: He/him, they/them, she/her. I don’t care as long as you are respectful
How do you identify on the gender spectrum? I don’t care
How do you identify on the sexuality spectrum? Gay
Growing up, did you know you were queer? How/when did you discover this?
The world seemed to know I was gay before I did. The first time someone told me I was gay was when I was 3 years old. It was a grown man and he was using it as an insult, which is funny given all the conservatives now who are claiming “children don’t know if they’re gay or straight, so stop pushing your agendas” are the same people who were labelling me as gay when I was 3.
What was your personal coming out experience? Were you met with any adversity in the process?
My coming out was not a surprise to anyone. My mother was very accepting, which did surprise me given her religious upbringing and my religious upbringing. There’s a lot that I am still dealing with and deconstructing from childhood.
How do you utilise the mediums of style, fashion and beauty to live as the most authentic version of yourself?
I just like what I like and I try not to let anyone else’s opinion stop me. Clothes and makeup are powerful things. They have long been used to express individuality or conformity. I’ve never been someone interested in conforming. What’s masculine and feminine changes so dramatically over region, era and socioeconomic level. It’s ridiculous to let what section of a store something is put in determine whether or not you like it. I do not wear men’s clothes and I do not wear women’s clothes. I wear my clothes.
Sadly, I still live in north Texas. I have to tone down who I am somewhat every time I step outside. Clothes and makeup have never harmed anyone, but people have definitely been harmed because of their clothes and makeup, personalities, voices and mannerisms.

How do you identify on the sexuality spectrum? Gay
Growing up, did you know you were queer? How/when did you discover this?
Yes, my eyes would tend to follow men and I only looked at women as friends. I knew I was gay around 9 years old and came out at 13.
What was your personal coming out experience? Were you met with any adversity in the process?
My brother and my father tried everything they could to make me not gay. My mom was accepting but I pretty much learned what it was to be gay from the internet.
How do you utilise the mediums of style, fashion and beauty to live as the most authentic version of yourself?
I love to wear bright colours and don’t really care what other people think about it. I’m still getting used to wearing dresses in public. I like sticking to my first instinct for my “look” for each day.
From cute vintage dresses to fashionable accessories, we have collected a list of the most amazing vintage finds that are not only in perfect condition but also look way more fashionable than our regular clothes these days. ]]>It can be hard to know which trends have staying power, and what is just tomorrow’s forgotten TikTok aesthetic. But we have a feeling “quiet luxury” isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. The term itself might be new, but the style it describes is anything but. Well-made investment pieces that lack bold logos and colors have always been around, but recent forces in pop culture (and a whole lot of social media commentary) have made them undeniably buzzy. The popularity of HBO’s Succession, alongside celebs sporting more tailored, minimalist ‘fits rather than label-heavy apparel, has led to the “stealth wealth” look going mainstream again. Fashion enthusiasts worldwide are now giving it their own spin, either via the opulence of a timeless investment piece or a really convincing dupe. (Now that’s the real stealth wealth).
R29 editors have also embraced the trend, even if we’re more likely to be heading to the L train over the Roy family’s private jet. For a little taste of quiet luxury, check out our picks that range from high-quality basics to classy jewelry and timeless handbags we swear by. You could even curate a whole head-to-toe outfit from our editors’ recs. Ahead, browse through R29 editors’ top quiet luxury list to live out the “old money” aesthetic, starting at just over $50.
“I don’t often have the funds to invest in new designer/luxury big-ticket items, but high-quality basics is a category I feel is really worth the investment. This near perfect — and slightly under-$100 — pointelle tank is on the more attainable side and is something I know I’ll wear over and over and over again.” — Kate Spencer, Senior Affiliate Strategist
“For the typical Rowing Blazers shopper, buying a preppy accessory or sweater may not seem like a splurge, but for me, it was a fun summer indulgence that I love to brag about. I recently wore my last season RB mountains painter’s hat on a vacation out west, and cannot recommend treating yourself with a fun accessory or hat enough. If you’re most suited to the classic RB style, a la the Princess Diana iconic sheep sweater, may I tempt you with the matching sheep crocheted bucket hat that’s almost a little too perfect.” — Clare Palo, Senior Strategist Audience Development
“In my book, quiet luxury items are the styles where you walk past someone in the streets and have to take a second glance because they look so polished, but you can’t quite put your finger on why. Sandro Paris does it for me with all of its Parisian-chic ensembles. The brand recently released a plethora of the latest summer arrivals, and this matching pointelle knit set caught my eye.”
“The delicate details like the pattern, the pleats in the skirt, and the contrasting stripes are all subtle but eye-catching. The best part is that the styling capabilities are endless. Just imagine the set with a sweater draped on your shoulders with mules, or paired an oversized black wool coat and loafers for the fall.” — Vivien Lee, Affiliate Fashion Writer
“If you know me, you know I dream of nothing more than to be dressed in head-to-toe The Row — and essentially morph into the fourth Olsen sister. So it should be no surprise that I was seriously considering investing in this perfectly sized classic black bag as a birthday gift to myself, but ultimately decided to give myself another month or two to save some dollars before I take the plunge into supple leather heaven. Note: if you’re interested in something similar that’s also big enough to fit a laptop. Check out this hidden-gem leather bucket bag from J.Crew!” — Kate Spencer, Senior Affiliate Strategist
“To me, nothing encapsulates ‘quiet luxury’ more than a well-made linen button-down shirt, especially if the material is French linen. I’ve been wearing this striped number from Alex Crane whenever I want to channel my polished side.”
“It’s a very simple item at first glance, but the devil is in the details: the full-bodied organic linen looks good even with a bit of wrinkling after multiple washes, the tips of the collars can be buttoned down like a dress shirt, and the buttons are made from corozo, a compostable nut derived from the rainforests in Brazil. It’s my favorite casual chic item I always reach for whenever I am not sure what to wear, and it looks great on its own (I like to tie a knot at the end for a more retro vibe), or as a layering piece worn over a slip dress.” — Venus Wong, Senior Travel Writer
“What I like about the quiet luxury trend is that it’s allowed understated brands like Polène shine. This bag is the epitome of quiet luxury: well-made, cheaper than actual designer bags, and incredibly versatile and classic. This is actually my work bag since it fits a 13-inch laptop and all my essentials without feeling bulky. Because of this, I’ve worn it with pretty much anything, from jeans and a white button-down to a maxi skirt and tank top.” — Frances Solá-Santiago, Fashion Writer
“As far as statement jewelry goes, you can’t get any classier than gold metal and pearls. I love the size of the Thai freshwater pearls dangling off these earrings (they are certainly big enough to spot from a distance), and the fact that they are permanently secured on a fixture in the middle of the hoops. This gives me peace of mind as someone who has unfortunately lost a number of charms when they were a removable option.”
“The hoops are made from gold vermeil and consist of a thick layer of 18K gold over sterling silver, which means it’s both waterproof and much more longer lasting than gold-plated jewelry. I plan to wear these all year-round, to add a touch of “quiet glamour” to everything from my puff-sleeved dresses to my cashmere turtlenecks.” — Venus Wong, Senior Travel Writer
“Bottega Veneta’s Jodie bags haunt my dreams, immediately followed by Celine’s Triomphe bags. The two are interchangeable. One thing for sure is that I desperately need a new wallet, and I “accidentally” stumbled upon one of my favorite Bottega Veneta shades: raintree. It’s a deep forest green for which you can’t help but fall head over heels. I find it to be elegant, classy, and one that I can use even when I’m a 90-year-old Grandma. I love and want it, and while I’m indecisive when it comes to designer goods, hopefully, one of you lucky people will decide to give it a nice home.” — Vivien Lee, Affiliate Fashion Writer
“I live in elevated basics and am always on the hunt for the perfect white tee. This Lululemon tee is a recent favorite of mine, and for many reasons: For starters, the fabric is a sturdy yet lightweight cotton blend that holds its shape while not being too stiff or awkwardly thick. Next is the fit; it’s ever so slightly cropped, but not so much so that it veers into baby tee territory, which to be clear, is *a* vibe, but not my vibe. The sleeves are also the perfect length, and I love pairing it with everything from denim to a silk skirt.” — Karina Hoshikawa, Senior Writer
“Nothing says quiet luxury like a piece of simple jewelry you can wear every day and eventually pass down (if that’s your vibe). I particularly love a signet, and the bar style from one of my favorite jewelry brands Starling is a unique take on a classic. It’s handmade from certified recycled 14K gold and is versatile enough to wear on it’s own, stack with your other everyday rings, or slip on a necklace chain to add to a personalized charm necklace.” — Kate Spencer, Senior Affiliate Strategist
“A simple button-up is very easy to buy, and to buy cheaply. But this not-so-cheap (OK, outrageously priced) button-up is the one in my collection I love the most. It is juuuust the right amount of relaxed without feeling sloppy. (I don’t want to look like I’m going to the boardroom, after all — I want to look like I’m ready to get on my yacht!) I also get compliments on it all the time, which I feel is how you know a basic is really worth it. I will say that, sadly, Frank & Eileen only goes up to an XL, but the XL fits me well enough and I’m around a 14/16 in most tops.” — Marshall Bright, Affiliate Editor
“To me, quiet luxury is all about craftsmanship and timelessness which means costly. But sometimes that means you’ve gotta drop some coin as you pay for what you get. I’ve never been one for big logos, which is what draws me to this bag, it’s simple, well made, and versatile – something that will last a lifetime and also be able to be passed down to my children. As I usually wear gold jewelry and neutrals, I can easily style this bag with any number of outfits during the week.” — Becca Sax, Affiliate Coordinator
“Your choice in footwear can make or break an outfit (not really, but kind of), which is why investing in timeless yet comfortable, shoes is totally worth it. While Franco Sarto’s shoes aren’t the most expensive on the market, they are comfortable and look good (and I own many pairs that I love). If you’re looking for shoes that will go with multiple outfits while keeping your dogs happy, this is the brand for you.” — Becca Sax, Affiliate Coordinator
“Pups can get into quiet luxury, too. My rescue pomchi Miso adores this beautifully made collar from boutique brand Shaya — it’s hand-crafted from Italian leather and is the most luminous hue of royal blue. In terms of styling, Miso’s lustrous double coat looks pretty good just as it is, but he is known to pair his collar with a silk scarf for an extra dose of luxury.” — Karina Hoshikawa, Senior Writer

]]>Adding colour to your wardrobe can change your life.
Seven years ago, I was often the woman in black. A few of my outfits were colourful, and I always felt happy when I wore them. However, as I was not at my ideal weight, I believed I should be wearing a more slimming colour. Of course, by slimming, I meant black.
No one can argue the value of a little black dress or a perfectly tailored black suit. Both go with everything, can be accessorised easily and are appropriate nearly everywhere. Unless your little black dress is seriously well cut or is a style that is on the daring side, wearing black is a great way to blend in. However it is hard for anyone to really step into their potential, to really live their best life, if they are seeking to simply blend in. We need to stop shrinking ourselves physically and metaphysically, and a big step in the right direction is to wear colours that make you feel fabulous.
The irony is that black rarely makes anyone look smaller, not that we should be trying to shrink ourselves in any way. In reality, it can do the opposite, and it does not flatter most skin tones. Adding colour to your wardrobe and wearing colours that work with you can help you look your best and feel fabulous at the same time.
A few years ago, having embarked on a fitness and nutrition program that transformed my body, I found myself with a wardrobe full of things that no longer fit. Shopping excursions to remedy this were frustrating because while so many more clothes actually fit me, I could not find anything I believed suited me nor that I felt excited to wear.
My friend and personal trainer Debbie Wyer recommended I speak to Sarah van Dort. As a stylist, Sarah helps her clients step into their true potential by choosing clothes and accessories in colours and styles that really work for them. I always resisted any kind of colour analysis because I felt it would restrict what I could wear. On the contrary, once Sarah helped me find the colours that suited me best, I had a much broader scope of colours to choose from than I ever believed possible, some of which I had never even considered before.
In addition to my favourite blues, I had an array of light, clear, cool colours to choose from. As Sarah explained, most people can wear every colour, but they can’t wear every shade of every colour. For example, a true red with blue undertones looks fabulous on me, but an orangey red makes me look palid. Depending on the colour of your eyes, skin and hair, the opposite may be true.
Think about your favourite colour for a moment. How do you feel when you see it or are surrounded by it? Most responses include happy, relaxed or energised. If you wear colours you love, chances are it will lift your mood.
I feel much more energised when I wear colourful clothes and I firmly believe it energises those around me as well. If I wake up feeling tired, popping on a brightly coloured dress or blouse, or adding a pop of colour like a handbag, scarf or statement necklace really peps me up. Similarly, if I have a daunting task to undertake or a meeting which I am nervous about, colour always gives me that little extra bit of energy and confidence.
I mean no offence to the iconic Coco Chanel, who introduced her first Little Black Dress in 1926. No one can dispute that a little black dress – or a black garment of any kind – is a safe choice. However the comfort one takes in fitting in is, for me, completely overwhelmed by the soul destroying sameness of a room full of women wearing a variation on exactly the same thing. I don’t know about you, but I’ve never accomplished anything that has made me feel proud or confident in my comfort zone.
While I agree it can be terrifying to be the little red dress in a sea of black at a formal affair or the only mum in a brightly coloured trench coat in a sea of black or beige on the school run, I would argue that colour is a secret weapon when it comes to confidence and adds a real joie de vivre to our days. These days, I look forward to being that bright spot of colour in a sea of neutrals.
Of course, there are occasions when wearing black can make you feel amazing. My black Alexander McQueen trouser suit brings me joy every time I wear it and my classic Burberry trench is practical a well as stylish. However, when I do wear black, I always wear with a colourful blouse and accessories to make my eyes sparkle and my skin glow.
To start with, just choose a bright jacket, blouse, handbag or pair of shoes that makes your heart sing. As you gain confidence, you can continue adding more colour to your wardrobe. Or buy just one dress in a bright colour that makes your eyes sparkle.
Even if you think you know the colours that suit you, talking to a stylist who does colour analysis can be so enlightening. Whether they espouse the seasonal colour system or a tonal colour system, you may find that you have some delightful options you never even considered. Personally, I prefer a tonal analysis as it offers a slightly broader spectrum and I feel like it gives me more options. (I am light, clear, and cool.)
In addition, a stylist can help you discover not only what suits you, but also what you love to wear. While there is a cost involved, I found consulting a stylist actually saved me money as I no longer make expensive mistakes nor do I end up with clothes that I never wear hanging in my wardrobe.
If you choose to go with an outfit in a bright solid colour, choose complimentary accessories so that you can wear it on lots of different occasions, in lots of different ways.
If the outfit has two pieces, for example a blouse and a skirt or trousers and a blazer, remember to wear the pieces separately as well as together. Just because you buy something together does not mean you can only wear it as a set.
Once I started to add more colour to my wardrobe, I found that I felt more confident, even in stressful situations. I started to expand my horizons more, networking in real life as well as just online to promote my writing and my website. Seeking out new experiences came more easily, as I searched for occasions to wear the clothes that made me feel good.
I discovered that I like it when people notice me, and embraced my dramatic style personality, something I had been keeping under wraps for years. It was, and still is, incredibly freeing.
Adding colour to your wardrobe is invigorating, enlightening and may even give you more confidence. As for me, I am proof positive that it can even change your life.

]]>When starting anew, they don't use the phrase ‘clean slate' for nothing. As a matter of fact, when you're a DIYer, you tend to take this phrase quite literally—which is always a great thing! There's no better feeling than getting a fresh start without the unnecessary waste and mess in our lives! So, as Mother Nature gives the cue for starting over, be armed and ready with your personal cleaning checklist! Here are the ten crucial items you must include on your list.
At the top of my cleaning checklist is this ingenious coffee cup holder! Just attach to your wall some spray-painted wooden dowels stylishly glued together, and voila! Your mornings are clutter-free!
Who knew a vintage cigar box would make a great jewelry organizer? Folding some burlap inside the boxes is all it takes to finish this easy and simple DIY project. An organizing hack for your everyday necessities definitely belongs on your cleaning checklist!
Would it really be a cleaning checklist without a good DIY shelf? The name of this shelf basically explains how it's done: two boards of reclaimed wood drilled to the wall, fastened by vintage leather. It's perfect for displaying newfound items for spring!

Using a birdcage as a desk organizer? Who would've thought! The key to this DIY organizer is spray paint and wooden dowel rods! The best part is: this organizer is portable!
As much as we understand spring is a season of renewal, we tend to keep some old stuff from the past. If you don't want them displayed in your home, then this hidden storage should be on your cleaning checklist! Just glue together a couple of unused book spines, and you've got a secret hiding place.
Ladders aren't just for construction work anymore. They can now be used for organizing your stuff into a stylish and fashionable display. Just take this ladder display for example. Could you think of an easier way to declutter your space?

This has got to be my favorite on this cleaning checklist! I'm excited to welcome spring because I have this amazing pegboard wall organizer. Just by drilling some wooden dowels onto a chosen size of plywood, you'll have an organizer for all kinds of stuff! Truly an investment not just for spring, but for an entire year of organizing!
Spring is also the season to try new recipes. For delicious and mouth-watering meals, you need fresh herbs and spices stored in this lovely spice jar storage! Can you believe all it takes is twisting a couple of wires and drilling nails on the wall? A must-try DIY project!
As we welcome spring, thoughts, events, and memories must be organized too! Get a couple of cork boards and paint them any way you want. I suggest painting your custom cork board in such a way that it grabs your attention every day.
If you're like me who can't stand articles of clothing lying around the house, this scarf hanger is the first thing you should make this spring. It doesn't even take much time: simply use some pliers to shape a line of wire into a hanger. Use a stretch of leather for embellishment.
Watch this video from kikomoda for more DIY items you can add to your cleaning checklist:
I'm sure going through this list has given you enough time to think about what needs to go and what needs to stay in your life. Don't think of cleaning as getting rid of stuff you might miss or need in the future. Cleaning is about one principle: keeping what's essential and important. The same could be said about life. Why waste time and energy on things which don't matter? And if there's any time to remind us of the value of a cleaning, it's spring. So welcome it with these amazing DIY projects on your cleaning checklist!

Make 12 Totally British Recipes In The AGA.
No new British recipes this past week. Too busy playing in the garden! I did make a weeks worth of meals on Monday though, so that was nice.
I’m thinking I may have to pick up this goal again in the fall.
British recipes I’ve made in the AGA so far:
Turn The Craft Room Into a Proper Studio Spac
Changes I plan on making to the space:
Hook 100 Rugs {53 of 100 done so far}
Currently working on rugs #54 and #55.

We’ve still got about another 10 days until the garden is totally planted with vegetables and holy cow man, when that’s done I think I might have to have myself a pajama day!
Still left to plant:
Corn, sunflowers, summer squash, winter squash and more beans and beets.
Then I’ll work on getting the flowers I started in trays planted.
On one hand it seems like the planting will never end. On the other hand I know it will and I’m excited for that sweet spot of a few weeks of no real work before all the harvesting and canning begins in earnest.
When it comes to gardening in Maine… It’s all or nothing around here.
Empty The Canning Cupboard / Fill The Canning Cupboard
It actually feels like the canning cupboard is starting to thin out. We are down to our last jar of green tomato piccalilli, the jams are dwindling and the salsa is too.

In this blog post, we will provide you with a collection of informative and easy breastfeeding tips to help you navigate this incredible journey successfully.
Whether you’re a new mom or need a refresher, these tips will empower you to embrace breastfeeding with confidence.
There’s no one-size-fits-all for breastfeeding moms and breastfed babies. Your journey will differ from another mom’s – and that’s completely ok.
Immediately after birth, ensure uninterrupted skin-to-skin contact with your baby. This practice promotes early bonding and triggers your baby’s innate breastfeeding instincts, making latching easier.
Proper latching is crucial for comfortable and effective breastfeeding. Ensure your baby’s mouth covers not just the nipple but also a significant portion of the areola. This helps stimulate milk flow and minimizes nipple soreness.
Personally, baby and I had a great latch at the hospital, but after a few days, I experienced extreme discomfort.
Although some professionals are against using nipple shields, I immediately ordered a pair due to the pain.
This helped relieve the tension and didn’t disrupt baby from latching in my experience. Once he was a few months old, we simply didn’t need them anymore. So do what works best for you in this scenario.
I ordered two pair – one for home and one for the baby bag.

Don’t hesitate to reach out to a lactation consultant or a breastfeeding support group. These experts can help guide you through any challenges and provide personalized advice tailored to your unique needs.
Newborns have tiny stomachs and require frequent feeding sessions, typically every 2-3 hours. This frequent feeding pattern helps establish your milk supply and ensures your baby receives adequate nutrition.
Learn to identify your baby’s hunger cues, which can include rooting, sucking on fists, or making smacking sounds. Promptly respond to these cues to establish a healthy feeding routine and avoid unnecessary crying or fussiness.
Breastfeeding is a demand-supply system, and nursing on demand helps regulate your milk production. Feed your baby whenever they show signs of hunger, rather than adhering to a strict schedule.
Remember, breastfeeding requires energy and nutrients from your body. Stay hydrated, maintain a balanced diet, and get sufficient rest to support your milk production and overall well-being.
If your breasts feel uncomfortably full, consider using warm compresses or taking a warm shower before nursing. Gentle hand expression or using a breast pump can help relieve engorgement and make latching easier for your baby.
Experiment with different breastfeeding positions to find what works best for you and your baby. Popular options include the cradle hold, cross-cradle hold, football hold, and side-lying position. Use pillows or cushions for support and maintain a relaxed posture.
Your baby’s diaper can serve as an indicator of their feeding progress. Expect at least six wet diapers and three bowel movements per day after the first week. Tracking these output signs can assure you that your baby is getting enough milk.
Cluster feeding, where your baby wants to nurse more frequently for a period of time, is normal and serves multiple purposes. It can help boost your milk supply, provide comfort, and fulfill growth spurts. Be patient and responsive during these phases.
[TAG3]Nipple soreness is common initially, but it should improve as you and your baby become more comfortable with breastfeeding. To alleviate soreness, ensure a proper latch, air-dry your nipples after feeding, and apply lanolin or other nipple creams if needed.
Encourage your partner to participate actively in the breastfeeding journey. They can assist with positioning, burping, and offering emotional support, which can make a significant difference in your breastfeeding experience.
Breastfeeding can be challenging at times, but don’t lose hope. It takes time for both you and your baby to establish a rhythm and for you to become more confident. Stay persistent and seek support whenever needed. Remember, every breastfeeding journey is unique, and it’s okay to ask for help or make adjustments along the way.
Before taking any medications or herbal supplements, consult your healthcare provider to ensure they are safe for breastfeeding. Certain medications can pass through breast milk and may affect your baby’s health.
To establish a strong breastfeeding relationship, avoid introducing artificial nipples, such as pacifiers or bottles, during the first few weeks. This helps prevent nipple confusion and ensures your baby becomes accustomed to breastfeeding.
Keep your breasts clean and dry to prevent infection. Avoid using soap on your nipples as it can cause dryness. Instead, rinse with water during showers and allow your breasts to air-dry whenever possible.

Babies often go through growth spurts where they require more frequent nursing. These phases can be demanding and may leave you questioning your milk supply. Rest assured that frequent feeding during growth spurts helps boost your supply to meet your baby’s increased needs.
If your baby needs soothing between feedings, try non-nutritive sucking techniques. Use your finger, a clean pacifier, or even your breast to pacify your baby without offering a full feeding. This can help fulfill their need for comfort without overfeeding.
If you plan to breastfeed in public, invest in nursing-friendly clothing or use a nursing cover or scarf for privacy. Practice breastfeeding discreetly at home to gain confidence in feeding your baby in various settings.
If you plan to return to work or need to be away from your baby, consider pumping and storing breast milk. Invest in a quality breast pump and learn proper pumping techniques. Follow recommended storage guidelines to maintain the freshness and quality of the milk.
Blocked milk ducts can occur when milk flow is obstructed. To alleviate this, apply warm compresses to the affected area, gently massage the area towards the nipple, and nurse frequently to help clear the blockage. If the issue persists or leads to mastitis (breast infection), consult a healthcare professional.
When it’s time to wean your baby from breastfeeding, consider doing it gradually to minimize discomfort for both of you. Replace one feeding session at a time with a bottle or solid foods while continuing to provide emotional closeness and comfort.
As a mother, you have an innate understanding of your baby’s needs. Trust your instincts and listen to your baby’s cues. Breastfeeding is not just about providing nourishment; it’s also about building a deep emotional connection with your little one.
Breastfeeding is a beautiful and rewarding experience, but it can also be challenging. By following these informative and easy breastfeeding tips, you can navigate the journey with confidence. Remember to seek support, trust your instincts, and be patient with yourself and your baby. Embrace the bond that breastfeeding creates and cherish this special time with your newborn.

Midi dresses are becoming increasingly popular for women over 50. Not only are they stylish and flattering, but they also offer the perfect balance between comfort and elegance. With a few styling tips, any woman over 50 can create a stylish look with a midi dress that is modern, fashionable, and chic.
Midi dresses are a great classic look and look good on every body shape. They are perfect for special occasions and can be worn every day depending on your personal style. Your dress wardrobe should consist of all dress lengths, mini dresses as well as maxi dresses.
Because midi dresses come in so many different styles they are great for special events and are especially nice in warmer weather. Midi dresses are so versatile and can be styled in so many different ways, they are perfect for many different occasions and are wardrobe essentials.

I think dresses are a great choice and a woman can’t go wrong owning many types of dresses. If you are one who follows fashion trends, this season’s midi dresses are a wardrobe essential.
Women often ask questions regarding midi dresses, they can be a bit tricky to style, especially for shorter women. However, there is a great midi dress for everyone. Here are a few answers to common questions regarding how to style a midi dress:
Absolutely! Midi dresses are the perfect way for mature women to look modern and elegant. The midi length is flattering on a woman’s body no matter their size or age, and they can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.
A classic style dress with short sleeves or puff sleeves makes for a great casual look, while a sleeveless dress, or one with long sleeves can be perfect for those who don’t like to show off their upper arms, or for more formal social events–cocktail attire, for example.
With some simple styling tips, any woman over 50 can create an age-appropriate look with a midi dress. Wrap dresses are perfect for all figure types, dresses with an empire waist are great for hiding a tummy, while sheath dresses are great for those with a slim figure. The style of dress you choose is up to your fashion sense, and body type.
When choosing a midi dress for an older woman, the ideal length should be just below the knees. This length is both flattering and age-appropriate, while still allowing you to show off your curves.
For added coverage, you can also opt for a midi dress with a slightly longer hemline that falls at the calves or ankles. This length is particularly flattering on taller women and can be dressed up or down.
When styling a midi dress for an older woman, it’s important to focus on creating a look that is modern yet age-appropriate. One way to do this is by pairing the dress with classic accessories such as a structured blazer or tailored jacket. Don’t be afraid to mix a feminine dress with a denim jacket or a leather jacket.
Add a tweed jacket in the fall to help transition your dress through the seasons. The juxtaposition between a feminine dress and a very masculine jacket can be very chic. You can also add texture and interest to your outfit by layering a light cardigan over the dress and accessorizing with delicate jewelry pieces.
Finally, choose footwear that is both comfortable and stylish – think pointed-toe flats or heeled sandals for an elevated look. If you love high heels, don’t be afraid to choose them as well, heels are a favorite of mine.
It’s important to remember that the key to a successful midi dress look is all in the styling. When creating an outfit with a midi dress, it’s important to pay attention to proportions and choose accessories and footwear that are age-appropriate.
If your outfit feels too frumpy, you may want to try adding a structured blazer or tailored jacket to give the look some shape and sophistication. Additionally, keep in mind that the right fit is key – don’t be afraid to size up or down if necessary for a flattering fit. With these tips in mind, you’ll be sure to create an outfit with a midi dress that flatters your figure and looks modern and chic.
Pay careful attention to the fit and length of your midi dress, making sure the length falls at the most flattering point of your calf. The choice of the shoe also makes a big difference in whether or not your outfit will look frumpy.
Choosing modern accessories such as a trim handbag, an attractive shoe, and modern accessories will elevate your look and send a more modern, fashion-forward statement. Finally, if you choose to wear a jacket or sweater over your midi dress, make sure it fits well. If the sweater or jacket is too big, it will look frumpy.
The shoes you choose to wear with your midi dress can make or break your look. If you are attending a more formal event, opt for classic pumps in black or nude.
For casual occasions, stylish sneakers or sandals can be paired with a dress for a more relaxed look. Heeled sandals are also an excellent choice if you want to add some height, while pointed flats or loafers will work well for everyday wear.
Boots are also a great option for those cooler days. Choose knee-high boots in a matching color to elongate the look of your leg, and if you want to add an edgier vibe, opt for a pair of statement boots with embellishments.
Booties and midi dresses can be tricky depending on the length of your dress. They can look great with tights, so you can wear your midi dress all year round.
You can make your midi dress look stylish by choosing the right materials and colors. For an everyday look, lightweight fabrics such as cotton or linen are perfect. Avoid tight silhouettes that may be too revealing for a woman over 50. Instead, opt for looser shapes that offer more coverage and movement.
Additionally, muted colors such as navy, black, or gray are great options for a classic and timeless look. Bright colors, bold patterns, and detailing like ruffles or pleats can be fun accents to add some extra interest.
Accessories are the key to taking any midi dress to the next level. Opt for simple yet sophisticated pieces such as pearls, a statement necklace, or an eye- for classic looks that will never go out of style. For a pop of color, try adding accessories in brighter hues to pull together the look.
Jackets and sweaters are a great way to add versatility to your midi dress. Adding a cardigan or structured blazer can give the outfit more shape and definition while also providing an extra layer of warmth.
A statement belt is another great way to bring attention to your waistline and create a flattering look, as are hats or scarves for added texture and visual interest.
By keeping these tips in mind, you’ll be sure to create a chic, age-appropriate midi dress look that is truly your own. With the right pieces and styling techniques, you’ll be able to rock any midi dress regardless of your age.
When styling a midi dress for women over 50, it’s important to remember that not all trends are flattering or age-appropriate. Skinny jeans, thigh-high boots, and mini skirts may be fashionable, but they may not always flatter a more mature figure.
Instead of trying to keep up with the latest trends, look for classic pieces that will stand the test of time. Invest in wardrobe staples such as tailored blazers or trousers in neutral colors that you can mix and match with your midi dresses.
When accessorizing, remember to keep it simple. Opt for minimalist necklaces or earrings that won’t overpower the outfit. If you’re looking for a bolder look, try adding an eye-catching scarf or hat to complete the ensemble. With these tips in mind, you’ll have no trouble styling an age-appropriate and fashionable midi dress look.
By following these simple tips, you’ll be able to create a timeless midi dress look that works for your body type and age. Whether it’s for a casual outing or a more formal one, you will look amazing.

]]>"This razor gave me the silkiest, smoothest shave I've ever had! I never get any cuts or scrapes, even on those hard-to-shave places."
The 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 packing method is a no-fuss formula that outlines exactly how much clothing to pack. Based on the space constraints of a carry-on, it’s designed to streamline your packing list down to what you actually need—no more, no less. Here’s the breakdown:
I’ve only recently discovered the genius of this method, but it dates as far back as 2015, when blogger Geneva Vanderzeil of Collective Gen posted about the packing formula she created for a 10-day trip to Greece. Although it’s designed for that week-plus-a-few-days type of trip, it could definitely work for longer stays too, as long as you do laundry at some point.
The trick to making this formula work is to select versatile pieces that work with all the other pieces in your suitcase. Stick to neutrals or a specific color scheme so you can easily mix and match items to create different outfits. You’ll also want to include plenty of variety. For example, your four bottoms might include two pairs of shorts in different materials, a skirt, and one pair of jeans. For bags, you might carry a larger tote with you on the plane, then pack a small statement handbag to whip out when you get there.
Source: @fashion_jackson
Now if you’re looking at this formula and wondering how to make it work beyond beach vacations, don’t fret. The beauty of this method is that it’s easy to adapt to your needs. If you’re heading to a cold-weather destination, skip the swimsuits in favor of accessories like a knit hat or scarf, then swap in a heavy coat for one of your tops. If your itinerary involves a lot of physical activity (like hiking or biking), trade the dresses for activewear instead.
You may need to tweak the formula slightly based on your travel plans or your own style preferences, but it makes a great starting point if you’re stuck on how much to pack. And I don’t know about you, but taking some of the guesswork out of packing is a huge relief.
