3 Fashion essentials to pack in your suitcase for a winter getaway

If youre planning a winter getaway this year, it can be difficult to know what to pack. Those chunky jumpers quickly fill up a suitcase, I can tell you! Likewise, you dont want to under-pack, as youll end up feeling chilly and have to stay indoors rather than heading out exploring. So Ive put together a list of essentials that you should pack in your suitcase to survive a winter break, whatever the weather throws at you..!

Forget about that heavy, hard-to-pack coat and thick jumpers. The most effective way to protect yourself from the cold is with layering. Multiple thin layers of clothing will keep you warmer than one thick layer because air becomes trapped between the layers and the warm air insulates you. This applies to tops and bottoms so dont forget to wear thermal tights or leggings under your jeans!

This is great news as it means youll only be packing lightweight and non-bulky items in your suitcase. You can go for a lighter coat perhaps a smart tweed knee-length jacket that will suit all occasions as youll be warm enough with the layers beneath it. Plus, its easy to cool down if you overheat when going from outdoors to indoors simply take off a layer!

If youre going to be in cold and frosty conditions (and really, even a UK getaway will probably be chilly at this time of year) youre going to need a pair of boots. Keep the cost low and go for some cheap thigh high boots with grippy soles. That way, the height of the boot will keep your legs warmer when you wear them over leggings, tights or jeans its essentially another layer.

Ive noticed that Im much cosier in my knee-highs than my ankle boots this year so Ive already made the switch. A nice pair of boots will work well for daytime walks and evenings out, depending on how you dress them up. I wrote a blog post last month about the ONLY 3 items of footwear you need for Autumn/Winter so have a read of that post to find out what you should pack to cover all eventualities for your festive getaway.

If youve already added thin layers and sensible boots to your suitcase, therell still be room for a few more items that really help to bring your outfits together during your winter getaway. Firstly, think about what accessories youll need outdoors a hat, gloves and scarf are essential to keep your extremities warm when you venture out of the hotel or holiday cottage.

If youre incorporating some festive food into your holiday such as a trip to the Christmas market or a full-on turkey roast dinner, youll also need an adjustable belt! And finally, the best way to dress up any outfit for the evening is to add a touch of sparkle so wear a necklace over that thin cashmere jumper and youre ready for a meal in the restaurant.

What else would you pack in your suitcase for a festive winter break? A classic Christmas jumper perhaps? Let me know in the comments below if you think Ive missed something important
