Are you a tough man? Do you shot gun your beers and if need be, will be willing to engage in a spot of fisticuffs? Are you able to chop your own firewood and guzzle a bottle of single cast whisky? Well, these traits — the traditional measures of a man — are dated in the world of Anthony Vaccarrello’s vision for the Saint Laurent Men’s Spring Summer 2022 show.

The lexicon for the show is simple, there is toughness in a softness that does not have to be taken literally. Think of softness as micro actions that translates to a new-age sensitivity. There is a certain strength in putting one’s hands in his pockets as opposed to the shyness it used to mean. Baring one’s cleavage in a Mick Jagger-esque sort of way means power and confidence, albeit not in a traditional chest-thumping kind of way. Even borrowing from the ladies (Vaccarello plundered the Yves Saint Laurent archive obviously) means that you’re a big boy who isn’t scared of judgement.

While the collection is big on the seventies and the eighties, we’ve simplified some of the trends for you. Think of them as gestures instead of clothing trends, all ready for you to adopt right now or the next season.

Look 9: There is a lot of chest bearing in the Saint Laurent Men’s Spring Summer 2022 show, all the better with a sheer kaftan-like top.

Look 17: The unlikely-suspect trend = the oversized pork pie hat. Also, another micro trend? The posture improving act of putting one’s hands in his pockets.

Look 25: Interestingly, the sneakers from the Saint Laurent Men’s Spring Summer 2022 are the most flamboyant yet. A sneaker that ate a sneaker that ate a sneaker…

Look 35: The body language of the models telegraph a punk-rock cool, made even more confident with head to toe leather.

Look 36: The opposite of the leg baring trend we’re seeing next season is the baring of the chest. Tip: unbutton up to four times from the top.

Look 42: The plunging necklines of the Saint Laurent Men’s Spring Summer 2022 highlight perhaps another micro trend next season, the graphic chest tattoo.

Look 49: Another easy to adopt trend next season is the silk skinny scarf, a Mick Jagger favourite.

Look 50: Showing a sliver of skin can come too with low-hanging arm holes.

Look 55: The drain pipe trousers are a Vaccarello standard but interestingly the vest is back, ready for layering over tank tops.

Look 59: A throwback to the iconic smoking suit at the Saint Laurent Men’s Spring Summer 2022 albeit this time, literally elevated with boots.
